And Hendriks continues to stay. It's the Upside Down from Stranger Things. Gotta think he's just gonna graduate and move on from basketball. Can't see Lewis wanting to keep him around.

My guess is he's short of credit hours to graduate after 4 years and will "milk" the system for 1 more year of free education. With so many holes to fill in Lewis' roster for next season, Hendriks just might pull it off.

I'm not so OK, not seeing last 3 games as the signature of the team. Losing starters hurts. I’m not ok either! If this is college basketballs future, I say the future sucks!

There was a banner on an electronic message board at one of the NCAA Basketball Tourney games over the weekend that said "Student Athletes". I couldn't help but think it should have said "Student Mercenaries" instead. It's got to hurt the academic progress of these so-called student athletes to transfer around every year. General classes in your freshman and sophomore years sure are pretty much the same everywhere, but those 3rd and 4th year classes in your major, not so much. Most of these kids are just basketball players who pretend to be college students. Maybe universities should just hire 13 guys each year to play basketball and not make them attend classes?

Have we now reached the point where net talent gains/losses from the portal has overtaken HS recruiting ability as the #1 determinant of coaching success? I think we have. Although I think that, by and large, the coaches who succeeded in recruiting will be the same ones who do well with the portal. And probably the same fans who approached their coach's HS recruiting with wishful thinking and ready excuses will also view his portal gains/losses the same way.

If Lewis kills it in the portal I bet most of this complaining about the portal dries up. When Whit was flailing he had his entire team bail on him and we still kept him. I assumed we were heading back to a 2-win season with a hodgepodge roster of individuals rather than a team. Yet somehow he managed to restock the talent surprisingly well.
Also, I note a strong disconnect between “i hope hendricks leaves” and “what ever happened to loyalty to the program.”

I appreciate the loyalty from Hendricks, but if you are close to 7 foot and can't dunk it may be time to find a new profession.

Deff leads to more interesting conversation It's interesting and gives chances to quickly improve. I doubt it builds a program. Much as good haul in the portal could help, there are negatives. Adding key pieces needed and fitting them into an existing framework with mostly returning players it can work really well. That's been the early story at a few higher level schools. Mostly players moving up, moving lateral but to a chance to win more, or play more. But power schools don't lose as many stars, or starters, we're losing our best and suffer from a lure to our best to move up. Years ago Tarkanian did consistently well at UNLV with high turnover built on juco recruiting, so I won't rule it out.

It's not the future, it's now. Better get used to it. Doesn’t mean I have to like it! Change is tough sometimes to accept. I think it is normal to want consistency. But like the Chinese proverb, I believe that there is opportunity in the chaos. In my current life I am involved to a small extent with a Big 12 / SEC athletic program. Across the athletic programs the difference between Mid-Major, and some of the same conference teams, and the top level programs that you can literally see is the size and strength of the of the athletes. Not just men's sports but the women's sports. Not just football, but every sport. I believe that the portal provides an opportunity for Ball State to get some of these upper level athletes. Maybe for a year or two rather than four. I believe that to compete at the higher level there is no doubt that Ball Sate needs to upgrade the level of our athletes. Bigger, stronger, faster. In basketball you only need one, two or three elite level players to make a major difference in your program. The four or five year athlete seems to be heading to extinction, but I see opportunity for mid majors. Can you upgrade by keeping what you have, maybe. Wouldn't that be nice. Wouldn't it be nice that the good athletes at Ball State would some how be immune to the "transfer portal flu"? Sometimes you have to give up something to get something better.

Chuckle, chortle...you made me laugh. In all this NIL, Portal, etc has anyone ever said anything about the APR? I am not sure if that long forgotten measure is still a thing. How can you transfer 4 institutions in 5 years and even hope to be on any course to graduate? We may think MOST of these "student athletes" are just basketball players pretending to college. Reality is that past the first rounds of the Draft and those that can make a living overseas, the 90% of athletes out there will need or want that degree to get to the next part of their life. The few NBA and Overseas Next level players have become the poster children that speak for the entire NIL, Transfer movement. APR ....is that still an enforcable thing with programs?

I saw Hendricks dunk it in a game this year. The word loyalty and the definition of it is now in a picture frame hanging in a quiet corner of the Smithsonian Institution.

Maybe Sellers tweet means he is staying without Sparks and betting on himself to lead the team.
