Really? Let the coaches get the kids that fit best into their program. Lewis is getting that done. Some of those guys from last year did not like to put the work in. Let's wait a couple of years. But since the entire starting lineup has turned over. And now we’ve upgraded with “kids who fit best in the program “. Shouldn’t the improvement be rather immediate? I hope. That's all I can do. But as Willie T. Stokes says, "Wish in one hand and s#!+ in the other and see which one fills up first."

We'll find out if Lewis can make chicken salad out of chicken s#!+ Coaches who don't recruit well often find themselves in this situation. Not sure whether the premise that he has recruited poorly is a good one.
I see several good adds, and the problem is we have few established players to make a judgment about where we are. This has been more a case of losing good players to the portal, and this loss is one we probably should have expected. It was a no brain decision to wait Coleman out, who apparently satisfied graduation requirements and then boogied.
Perhaps we should lament losing the last coach who recruited so many good players.

I am not here to defend Lewis's recruiting skill, but isn't about time we got past the fact that he curses and sometimes curses in front of kids? It all seems like a little bit of over the top pearl clutching...

It all seems like a little bit of over the top pearl clutching... To paraphrase Crash Davis: "If you win 20 games in the show, you can curse and the press'll think you're colorful. Until you win 20 in the show, however, it means you are a slob." Although he DID win 20 games last year...

It all seems like a little bit of over the top pearl clutching... It's a minor point, but it's not hard to adjust your language to the environment. Saying that its ok because kids have access to inappropriate language on the internet is like saying it's ok to play with your dick on the bench because kids have access to porn on the internet. Screaming f-bombs in front of kids is just an unnecessary and low class move for anyone. It's OK to state truths like this plainly and non-hysterically....which is what I am doing.

Perhaps we should lament losing the last coach who recruited so many good players. Keeping your own valuable players has always been the other side of the recruiting coin and is now more important than ever with the portal. It will be a vital factor at all levels of college ball. Some coaches will be better at it than others. Lewis had a good result in keeping Sparks last off-season when he was a new coach. But his record in keeping good players this off season after a year with the players can only be rated as terrible. He will never win jack squat with this level of player retention. Much like recruiting, it will be difficult for all MAC coaches, but some will succeed and they will be the ones winning championships.

I agree retention is a key. Should be easier with kids he signs than holdovers, but I continue to think coaches will regularly lose their best players.
I doubt any coaches will be much better than the others. Except if you recruit well it'll be harder to retain the best...
The idea of building around blue collar talent emphasis on toughness may help, important to keep kids with very high talent, but will be hard when they succeed.

College basketball is *almost* unrecognizable to me with the transfer portal and NIL money. Trying to follow recruiting is a waste of time. Not a fan. Not worth my time or money.
If Lewis manages to turn it around maybe I'll watch (if I'm not busy watching paint dry).

Throw away all those VHS scouting tapes of last year’s games and good luck to our opponents putting together a game plan to face our Cards.
Might be a good time to initiate putting names on front and back of unis so we can identify who’s who on the home team.

Seems if players can not honor their commitment, the schools should be allowed to revoke scholarships each year when the portal is open. Just my feelings. I'm kinda salty. Its hard to get emotionaly invested in a team these days. I miss the days of Majerus.

When the player enters the portal his aid ends.
Schools are already allowed to end scholarships for any player every year. It's a one year commitment. They do have to notify the player earlier in the summer before this time of year.
The grad transfer is however able to enter the portal outside the usual times, one of several exceptions to that window.
Termination is rarely done, at least not without taking care of the player, usually helping with a transfer or with aid related to an injury.
