6'9" and can't shoot from 3pt range does not equal NBA career in today's league.

6'9" and can't shoot from 3pt range does not equal NBA career in today's league. It's why Edey went back to Purdue. Except Edey also had a lucrative NIL deal and an option to play Euro ball if not the NBA. He's already proved he can do that. The question mark that also hurt him was defending the pick and roll and having to go out on the court to play D. The year extra may give him that chance for development, to prove his D, even use of the outside shot.
Sparks does have the same weaknesses, plus maybe not being a great post defender, but for sure, unfortunately, is not the kind of rim protector that gives him a great chance in the pros. So he MUST greatly improve outside shooting and be a great passer.
So. He needs not only more critical new development but a chance to show that. IU may help development but he could disappear at the end of the bench.

I don't think you have to go as far as discussing how he defends the pick and roll, or his PT at IU. The plain fact is that Sparks just simply and generally not good enough to play in the NBA. In the MAC, you have to pretty much be POY level, which Sparks was not, to be an NBA prospect, and even then it's very iffy.
I remember when my friend and I went to a Muncie Central game to see Bonzi early in his senior year. I came away thinking that here was a kid who could play in the NBA. There was an obvious athletic superiority. Sparks is not like that. He can work all he wants on defending the pick and roll and improving his outside shot, but he is not now and never will be an NBA player.

Just whatever chance he has, whatever pro level, requires improvement.

Typically, and maybe historically, a MAC player that ends up in the NBA will have carried their respective team to a conference championship or multiple conference championships. I.e., cough, cough, Earl Boy kins.

Was Louisville recruiting him or was that Chandler?

Bonzi was a top 50 high school recruit. He had offers from a ton of major conference schools. Chandler was also in the top 100 as well as Theron Smith. We don’t sniff those guys any longer, though the newest recruit made some noise in high school.

We don’t sniff those guys any longer, though the newest recruit made some noise in high school. In those days a local school counted since friends and family could see players play home games. IU and Purdue had bigger advantage than they do now with top Indiana players.
With ESPN and other expanded coverage of BB that is not very important. And with AAU ball on a national basis now part of every recruits experience they are exposed to other players and colleges from all over the country, it's harder to keep them home...
I never knew how we got TSmith, but local ties got us Bonzi who we would never get today, and Chandler who would be awfully hard to get today.

Going nostalgic is not going to help our predicament nor will bashing a one year coach. This is a f***** environment that appears to be constantly evolving in a negative way for ALL mid majors. Until there is some kind of national stability to recruiting athletes I don't see a real future for mid major sports.

There is a future, of course, just not one pretending the mid majors are in any way competitive with the P5, and for now revenue from FB and to lesser degree BB is going to keep the big powers literally in a different league.
