There is no doubt he has been strung along just take off your sunglasses and admit that. Now if the staff decides and tells him hey this is what we need and want from for you to have role here and he does not like it or want to do it 100% then he may need to look at different options. Yep.

Now if the staff decides and tells him hey this is what we need and want from for you to have role here and he does not like it or want to do it 100% then he may need to look at different options. I agree he should consider options. It looks to me he has a real chance to be a MAC standout, but probably not at QB. If going somewhere else really gives him a chance to be a #1 QB with a chance to play after college, he probably should go. If not, developing his talents here isn't such a bad think, is it?
As far as deception goes, I am less convinced. Being strung along by thinking he "had a chance" to compete for the job, all based on coaches telling him he will get practice reps, that much is true enough. At least at first.
But it wasn't exactly a mystery that he lost out on that job when he had a chance to see the other two guys play.
Whether it was an obvious difference in experience with Hatcher or the freshman talent, Kelly knew that and decided to fight for the job. That's fine. But both those advantages in the other players were obvious, and Kelly had a first hand opportunity to see he had an uphill fight.
The freshman factor maybe the greater one here. When the fight was Hatcher v Kelly, we all thought he had a chance to share reps based on his talent vs the experience level. That MAYBE, maybe a good chance, he would end up #1 or be looking at #1 next year. But add in the good freshman showing up in very good form and I'm sure both the player and the coach then should have had to recalibrate.
The fact coaches may have still said he had a chance when they doubted it very much, is possible here, but it is balanced more than a little in my mind by whether a reasonable person would be deceived by that statement. Was it reasonable reliance?
This in the end may just be a case of a good player being recruited over. I don't like that but it's a fact of life.

Yep. I agree, don't really see so clearly his prospects at QB elsewhere are that great.

I think this is a very good analysis of Kelly. Having had a chance to see all three, the Cal Kid appears to be the best. Hatcher appears second. Kelly is a clear third. However, Kelly has some good upside - at running back or maybe WR. IF he would be willing to switch positions, I think he’d be a true asset. Otherwise, the portal or next year awaits this talented kid.

I mean I guess it goes back to round peg square hole.. If Kelly is at Toledo he might be starting. Toledo takes the good and Bad of Finn they are fine with him missing throws and throwing picks cause they know at the end of the game he is going to have 200+ passing yards and 100 rushing. There will be a game he flat out loses but hes going to have 9-10 wins and sniffing a championship. Our staff just does not run an offense like that

Our staff just does not run an offense like that Can anyone explain BSU's offensive strategy? Get exactly 1/3rd of the distance to go. Punt on 4th and 1.

We might punt on our first possession Saturday, but probably not again until the 4th quarter. We will move the ball at will and score 50+ including a defensive touchdown. Our offense is not terrible, we have weapons, and even without Hunt we will convert 50% of our 3rd downs. Our offense is not as anemic as you'd think reading this board.

Get exactly 1/3rd of the distance to go. Punt on 4th and 1. You stole a copy of our playbook? Here's what I would add to the end to complete this prediction: Before punting, we will try to fake going for it, resulting in a 5 yard penalty and a 4th and 6.

It's really hard to say how good we will be offensively at this point. A safe prediction is that will will be decent to good, mainly because MAC defenses suck and MAC games typically feature high scoring. But with a freshman QB (likely) who hasn't shown downfield throws yet, QB controversy or at least indecisiveness, a hurt RB, a hyped OL that hasn't proven anything yet, Hunt's mysterious injury, and green WR's, it's hard to predict with certainty how productive we will be. It will be interesting to see how this post ages.

We are potentially not anemic based on the ability to move the ball a little bit vs KY and GA. Hard to see if we're any good or not after playing two superior teams. But, based on last years results and all the injuries and new players we have this year, especially at QB and WR, and the history of play calling with this OC, we can surmise the offense is anemic until proven otherwise. If we put up big numbers vs. ISU does it mean anything? If we DON'T put up big numbers, what does that say? Our true harbinger of where we are as a football team will come against Ga. Southern.
