Joey Brown is now in the portal, making 5 total leaving Ball State. Totally expected all part of the plan

Anderson had his moments. Middleton had upside. Neither were really quick or great defenders, though. We can add that.

Lewis knew he needed to remake the roster so he’s getting his chance. Totally agree. Lewis was pretty upfront that he ultimately didn't put a roster together that could contend for a Mac championship or play consistently good basketball. It seems like he learned after the 2022-23 season that you can't really build a program anymore. It's year to year A lesson after 2023-24 is you can't have 7 freshmen on your roster now, especially given what you lose each year and when 4 were projects at best. A lot of us saw this coming though right. A few high schoolers is ok. But gotta hit the jucos, portal, and grad transfers hard.

One thing becoming clear is that you don’t want to act all bitter towards any quality player that leaves your program. Transferring back again seems like it will not be an uncommon thing

So who ultimately gets squeezed out by the transfer portal? If mid majors can no longer survive recruiting high schoolers and projects and majors don’t want players less than 4 stars, that leaves a lot of decent high schoolers in the small college arena who have immediate upward mobility transfer on their minds from the beginning. It’s almost a comical cycle that is being created.

But, good news, not much NIL expense... We are a feeder system for majors, we survive in that role. Some HS players will develop into 4 year players for us, not quite good enough for bigger money transfer. Just like some top HS recruits will still play 4 for high majors. Best deal for them, not quite NBA material.

TMJ the only real headscratcher as to why By TMJ, I'm assuming you are referring to Trent Middleton and yes that is truly a headscratcher. He's exactly the type of player Lewis now needs to look for. A guy who can play the point with a decent 3-point shot. A guy who can compete against Brittian-Watts for the starting PG, take over the position if Brittian-Watts doesn't work out, or at least be a back-up off the bench. Preferably an underclassman you could hang-on to for a year or two past the upcoming season. Just what Middleton was.

I do feel somewhat bad for Zagorsak. He's a long way from home and his support system, Things have not worked like he hoped when he flew off across the ocean. Couldn't get much PT on a bad team and didn't do much when he did. Not sure what his options would be at this point

TMJ the only real headscratcher as to why Unless he has an offer back East or at a school he targeted out of HS, maybe an urban school? He had never visited BSU, so even if fits with the staff, this wasn't a place he'd be expected to be from the start.

Couldn't get much PT on a bad team and didn't do much when he did. Not sure what his options would be at this point He did get to play as a freshman, and seemed to avoid bonehead play when he did. He also did get part of what he must have wanted, to play against US college competition and have a chance to develop. He must have known he needed a lot of work and coaching to play, especially against better athletes. He wasn't the deadeye shooter he needed to be to get more minutes, and had to work awfully hard to play at college pace. If that's going to happen he can get PT at lower level, we didn't see a lot of guard skills which he'd need here.

Preferably an underclassman you could hang-on to for a year or two past the upcoming season. Just what Middleton was. Middleton, like Jones, got quite a bit of PT this year. Middleton in particular saw his minutes rise dramatically in the MAC portion of the schedule but also fell out of favor with Lewis for a 3-4 game stretch and didn't play at all. It appeared to be related to defensive lapses and not running the offense as called/being unaware of what play was being run. The other side of this is culture and mentality, IMO. Lewis seemed to lose his mind the most with the two freshman when they made a mistake and the consequence of that is a brow beating and bench. Jones seems immune while Middleton seemed more affected to me. Mike is very intense especially in the moment and the better you are the greater expectations he has of you. The upperclassmen specifically Basheer, Mickey and Anderson didn't get the hook nearly as often. In the case of Pearson and Jihad, almost never. Anderson some and Bailey much more so. This is all speculation of course. Middleton may have been homesick, didn't like the intensity/scrutiny or something else. I wish he would stay because he definitely has potential to be a solid player.
