@petethamel Sources: Ball State coach Mike Neu will return for a ninth season in 2024. Ball State went 4-8 this year. First-year athletic director Jeff Mitchell plans to explore ways to enhance the program and fully understand better ways to maximize football results. Neu is a Ball State alum and won the MAC in 2020 and also delivered the school’s first-ever bowl win. He's created a strong culture and belief in the locker room. The decision is an acknowledgment that the job is difficult and Mitchell aims to figure out a path for Ball State to consistently compete for MAC titles, as he’ll analyze scheduling, resources and NIL to help best position Ball State football. Whenever I want the real inside scoop on BSU Football, I always turn to Pete Thamel who is apparently the child actor who player Eddie Munster, Herman's child. Go google him. The decision might just as well be an acknowledgment that we are broke and have no possible way to cough up a 1.3 million dollar buyout without tapping one of our valuable donors for $$ we'd rather spend on something else. I got that from Pete the Janitor over at the Quad. By the way, one of the ways we could enhance the program and maximize our football results might just be to look at how lousy we were in many facets of the game like player development (QB's & WR's) and offensive play calling and introduce a radical concept called accountability resulting is a concept called shit canning a few assistants who aren't getting it done.

... can our new Athletic Director idly sit by and let the athletic program that eats the most money continue to go downhill without a comment or response? There seems to be a premise here that if we're better at football we lose less money. I think in reality the better we are at football the more money we lose. Win or lose on the field, I don't think there's much difference in how much red is on the ledger.

And expenses to achieve that increase for sure. The AD says he'll raise money, but that takes his and staff time. Emphasis on FB has costs to other programs. Developing new donors isn't easy, increasing general athletic donor money to FB has to come from somewhere. So I bet you are right.

BSU certainly saved a significant chunk of money by not qualifying for the Fred's Port-o-Potty Rental Bowl in Scranton PA, or whatever other 5th rate bowl berth a few more wins would have secured.

I have always wanted to go to Scranton. It is the Electric City and they have good hot dogs.

What?
Missing the chance for a December trip to a sunny venue?
The big downtown parade and pregame festivities?
A chance to hang with the other wealthy BSU fans and the BSU brass?
The national publicity on TV Wednesday night would provide?
A hangover at a bar nobody in Muncie has ever visited that makes the long drive home a real trip?

Sounds like you’ve never done it, or if you did, you definitely did it wrong.

Sounds like you’ve never done it, or if you did, you definitely did it wrong. I've enjoyed a bowl trip or three with BSU. But that Toilet Bowl prospect didn't sound so good. A bowl win does feel good when you've performed well. The trip can be worth it. But. The 2008 Bowl which was celebrating the height of our FB history was an adventure, but very BSUish in the end. Turned totally sour after the band left the field at halftime. We made a week of it, with a couple of days of on the Coast. The downtown was great, the fans and even the BSU brass were really great. That no name Irish Pub where we were finally out of the rain and even the hangover was welcome. But never a worst hour and a half of fan experience in our history, that second half. Except maybe the MAC title game we were hoping to erase from our memory with a redeeming win.

After reading Gus Martins new article its quite obvious that reaching bowl games is the Key.. Reach Bowl games coach here forever. So Mike get us to a bowl next year or its curtains

After reading Gus Martins new article its quite obvious that reaching bowl games is the Key.. Reach Bowl games coach here forever. So Mike get us to a bowl next year or its curtains Exactly. And I'm not sure 6-6 will ensure he stays. Especially if we can't win a bowl and finish with another losing record. Read the DailyNews article about BSU athletics. It's honest and real. We don't have a consistently strong fanbase. Look at the history of our football coaches. Our very best didn't win consistently. (Dave McClain was our greatest coach ever and all he did is win, but other than that, back to back winning seasons is pretty much our apex. Hoke was beloved, right? Legendary season in 2008. He was a within a hair of being fired until he brought in Stan Parrish and got a QB. He was sub .500 overall. Lembo had 2 great seasons and that was it. He's quoted in the article talking about how challenging a job BSU football is. As the writer says "That’s why the Cardinals are on their sixth coach in the past 30 years, and none of them have more than two winning seasons." He's not wrong. Schudel was a great coach but he couldn't get support and left. Bill Lynch had one championship year, and....a 21 game losing streak. Etc. etc. A lot has to change if we're to have a program like UT/OU/Miami (even Miami has struggles) All other MAC programs have peaks and valleys just like we do. We just have to find that spot between the peak and the valley and have something sustainable. But without serious funding, fan support and NIL money we're pretty much going to have seasons like we've been having. If you fire Mike and make a good hire and the next guy has a couple of strong seasons he'll be gone soon after and we start all over.

This is the MAC mentality that schools need to look like big schools.
That is a poor measure of quality that says the low level FBS schools are "real." Win 4 or 5 games in a bad conference forever and declare yourself a winner! Worse, it justifies the spending premium for FBS.

We are FBS and we will be until the MAC is not that's just not going to change so we will spend what we have too to keep up the charade. Nothing is going to change that.
AD also mentions the options for the army game would make the schedule harder. So we will be dealing with 1-3 non con record requiring us to go 5-3 in MAC play
