Let's just make them hourly employees of the university. No classes. Straight payroll. No tenure.
And no free education.
It would have to be mandated by the NCAA, though, for it to work fairly. So we know it won't happen.

NIL is the ultimate statement about the ME generation. No loyalty to anything except self. For those who stay committed to those who had confidence in their ability, I say thanks, you are a wonderful person. Otherwise, my love of sports is slowly slipping away. I used to love going to Pacer and Colts games, today I don’t even watch professional sports on tv - I found found my days to be better. If this is the direction of college sports, I will either start watching the Ivy League of follow Indiana Wesleyan, Franklin, or Wabash College, places where young men are playing for the fun of the game. Just don’t need or want the drama. Except for the love of the school and time when I went to Ball State, all loyalty for Ball State will be gone. Yeh, pretty much agree. I had a nephew who was on the football team at Earlham a few years back. Really didn't get to play a lot and I had the upmost respect for him doing it. Work their butts off for the love of the game. Not a lot of recognition. Yeh, I'm sure some academic assistance was gotten, but what a different perspective it was than what we're seeking now. Even smaller crowds than BSU, if that's possible, and yet they dedicated themselves to the game.

So we know it won't happen. Freedom of choice: Choose the NIL and you get access to the portal merry-go-round and you lose the college degree safety net when you “no go” on “go pro” Choose scholarship and you waive NIL and a trip thru the portal but you have access to the undergraduate degree (no one year contracts). Jay Bilas’ head would explode …..as he cashes yet another check from the arrogant excessive profits of his despised NCAA

This is not the players fault, exactly. Or their greed or entitlement or loyalty. It made sense to allow transfers more easily and to give players some rights to NIL. But the way the NCAA decided to go and how the NIL rights developed is a mess. The big money in P5/4 money sports created a need to do something. Things just can't be the same. In BB the tournament money seemed to work pretty well. In FB...no mechanism to share wealth in any way and not much economic leverage for G5. You may be on to something to dumb down most college FB to something more like D3. Maybe also rules change to eliminate so much specialization which requires CFB to mirror the pros and need so much coaching. More like 1950s CFB. Let P4 go it's own way. If they want G5 feeder system, let them pay for it. Can only agree with you last two paragraphs. One transfer without penalty, probably good. NIL MONEY, not good. These athletes got paid via scholarships! That’s a huge expense. That’s why I agree with your last two paragraphs.

The genie is out of the bottle and there’s no going back. Programs will either adjust and adapt. Or they won’t.

We need a few of our wealthiest alumni to dig into their wallets and I continue to say we should put the money into basketball and not football.
We have absolutely no chance to compete with the major football conferences and at best go to a second rate bowl!
If we put the football money into basketball just maybe we could build a competitive program. The fact is a program could be built around 2 or 3 key players plus a few other complimentary players

I don't favor dropping FB, or putting all savings into BB, but BB should benefit.
Other sports are deserving.

How much do you think per year the basketball team should spend to compete? Name some teams you think we should be on par with?

At a lower level we might free up 400K in coaching salary. Probably less, but substantial.
Reallocating say 200K to BB and 200K to other Program coaches would make sense.
Moving 10-20 FB scholarships to a new men's program, say Track and Field eats some money. But a couple scholarships going along with NIL elsewhere makes sense. Substantial NIL to BB. Staff and other expenses reallocated across the Department.
Certainly some donor money might be shifted, a lot of general fund CVC and a lot of NIL could be targeted to improve BB.
In BB that would move us into being a pretty well funded MVC or MAC program for sure.
No way we are funded as well as a P5. The kid's idea we tap more wealthy alums, that somehow I doubt. Not without results and without a big FB deficit. Might well lose overall athletic donations under a FB downgrade initially, at least until we showed BB success. That fuels giving, but you can't borrow against future success, have to ride the wave.
Majerus and Ray both tried to leverage success and FB got the money as a priority, much of it generated by athletic giving produced by BB.
