Now Brady Hunt is gone

Another one that was known before the season. Some of these guys had one foot out the door and supposedly a new school chosen and money promised before the season ever started. At least that was second hand gossip. We'll see if Brady and Koziol end up at the rumored schools.
But seriously, after the lack of utilization of the TE this past year can you blame either of them?
They are big losses but we've got some good young TE's.

Besides. What usage of TEs would have been with Hunt in the lineup is different than what we saw. Even what usage we might have had with healthy receiver corp which provided a deep threat, is open to question.
What usage we'd have seen after converting to RPO had we had the pass option is a really interesting question.
You can't blame all this on coaching decisions.

We were never going to keep those guys, good seasons or not. Bsu doesn’t have and will never have the money being offered to them. My only concern is, how “all in” is a kid if he knows he’s gone no matter what? Does it make him only try to avoid injury? Grinch about touches? Cause resentment with teammates? I don’t begrudge them the opportunity to make some serious jack, all I want is for them to give Bsu everything they have while they’re here.
As far as utilization this season— would love to know where the disconnect was. We know Kelly couldn’t find/hit Koziol. Was that all Kelly, or a mixture of Lynch and Kelly. Did cooper demand the ball more? (We did play better after we went heavy run). Bottom line, to not make sure your all conference tight end gets at least 5 targets/ catches a game is malpractice. Could be a factor in lynch demotion?
I’m not worried about the TE position we have some good young talent there and more coming in. What I am worried about is internal issues. You take highly decorated transfers it sometimes causes dissension if they are not “ball state players” all about how ball state football is played. Did that happen? I don’t know. What I do know is watching us play Miami we looked 100% connected. We had that damn game won and just couldn’t finish it. A fractured team would have had its doors blown off.
Mike has GOT to hire an OC from outside the program and not just give Elliot the full time job. We need a new, more aggressive and progressive play caller who uses the whole field and and a variety of players in a variety of ways. We cannot exist on 2 runs between the tackles, a throw to the boundary and punt for 60 minutes. So please Mike, step out of your box and bring our offense up to the level of the top MAC programs.

Are NIL deals reported to some governing body? For example, on3.com (link below) put Carson's deal at $99K and Coopers deal at $89K; I'm just wondering if there is a database that this website would have pulled the data from? I'd be interested for anybody "in the know" to comment on the accuracy of the numbers. I'm sure there are always "fringe" benefits that aren't reported. If the numbers are true, then BSU "does have the money" but just not enough for everybody that wants it. www.on3.com/transfer-portal/industry/football/2023/?orderby=nilvalue&position=rb

We were never going to keep those guys, good seasons or not...What I do know is watching us play Miami we looked 100% connected. We had that damn game won and just couldn’t finish it. A fractured team would have had its doors blown off...We need a new, more aggressive and progressive play caller who uses the whole field and and a variety of players in a variety of ways. We cannot exist on 2 runs between the tackles, a throw to the boundary and punt for 60 minutes. That aggressive play calling has to be based on a scheme that has a different premise. Easy to see plays that did not work. I am not convinced that choice of plays was it. I can give coaches some slack since they know what our players are capable of and are coached to do on a good deal of the conservative play calling. We are built under this staff to win with execution and grinding out wins. Never the most exciting FB, but it demands we have great position coaching, player discipline, and good talent. We don't really have that and didn't expect to have that this year did we?
Watching MAC FB for 40 years, I would conclude it is really hard to expect MAC teams to win without a more open offense which takes more chances. We are never going to have great talent, or great coaching. A day one change in approach this year wouldn't have mattered all that much. We probably didn't have the horses this year to do that. THAT is a big issue.
We ALMOST pulled off beating the two best teams with a game plan and scheme based on execution and defense. Granted that was with with the aid of very bad weather in one case, and a lax opponent in our last game. It is not the way to win in the MAC. Besides. We looked just plain not prepared and out manned too often in other games.
Whatever we might have done with no injury and with everything working the way coaches hoped, we still would have had a not very exciting, very plain vanilla approach. That may just not be the way to attract talent.
For multiple reasons, including the ability to make some high risk, high reward play calls, we have to change that approach.

We have to be very selective in who gets nil. It’s only a handful of players.

I understand your point. I was just curious how close to accurate the numbers were, if anybody knew and wanted to comment. Because if Cooper is making more than Hecklinski, I could see how things could get awkward. And that's not Coopers fault at all. At the same time, and the point I was making, is that based on the offense we had going into this season, paying big money for a RB made sense. If we are going to open it up and have an air-raid pro style offense, does spending more money on WRs make more sense? Just questions I'm asking myself.

I’d “invest” in qbs (Semonza) and boundary players. (Wr/cb). Running backs, you can get good ones without dropping too much on them. A good with vision and a good oline will work. Honestly we could have been productive if say, Pemberton was getting all the carries had he not gotten hurt. I even felt good about barfield. We don’t need A thousand yard rusher, we could do fine with 3 guys who combined for over 1k. We went Steele heavy last year and despite him Being Superman it didn’t matter. Balance is what we lack.

The only time I ever heard a number was we had approx 500,000 that we wanted to spend but that could be stretched to 750 per year for football all coming from private donors
Coops number sounds about right. Same convo mentioned Steele had been offered the most but turned it down

This year’s MAC championship game features two teams with mobile QBs and good defenses. We have a mobile QB and a good defense. And we nearly beat the two contending teams.

Both teams can credibly threaten to pass. We'd have had much less success in good weather in one game and against a team with something on the line in the other.

Good points. But we did have legit momentum as Kelly got more experience. Not sure what happened to our once great corps of consistently solid receivers.

Kelly is not Jordan Lynch but BSU had that type of team (NIU Lynch era) the last 4-6 games. Lynch struggled in the passing game, NIU had a strong running game and defense, and Lynch had the ability to break for a TD, running, nearly anywhere on the field.
