Lynch threw for 6000 yards and 49 TDs his last two season at NIU. He was truly a dual threat. Kelly is not. Lynch only played his last 2 years (out of 4). What can Kelly do with two full years? Even during Lynch’s final season, he looked incredibly uncomfortable passing - awkward. He was a runner, a legitimate Heisman Trophy candidate, and he kicked a$$. Not saying Kelly can be like that - but the best of the MAC struggled to stop Kelly. It is what it is. Kelly is special. Let’s dump him. LOL Kelly is an elite athlete and runner but he’s not even in the same zip code as Lynch was as a passer. I don’t remember Lynch as awkward as a passer when he kicked our ass. He and Levebre from CMU were just killers and when you started loading the box they’d burn you down field. None of this screen or 1 yard in the flat crap. Kelly is three years into his career at Ball State and I love him as a playmaker wr/rb hybrid ala Justin Hall. I just don’t think he’s our QB next year. No pass catcher is going to come play in an offense that is closer to the wishbone than west coast. Maybe we would have lost Koziol and Hunt anyway but they sure as hell weren’t going to stay in an offense that throws for 75 yards a game. It’s a joke.

We better find some NIL cash in the budget to pay our First Team All MAC tackle this spring too. He’s a kid who will find a spot on an NFL roster when he’s done and someone will dangle some 💰 his way.

Gotta love NCAA transfer portal. Jordan McCloud: USF-Arizona-James Madison-IU? Wonder how many academic credits he has accumulated?

NIL is going to destroy the MAC. These rosters will basically be FCS rosters moving forward

Wasn't he supposed to be the heart of this team?

Wasn't he supposed to be the heart of this team? Kinda gives you a picture as to why we haven’t done anything since 2020 when your supposed “rocks” start jumping ship.

Im actually good with it next year we are going to see a brand new team with hopefully a new oc. Its kinda exciting I’m with you. While it sucks to lose all those cats, it’s why you recruit. With the portal you have to really be on top of your game. We’ve seen the same team lose the last 3 years so I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of fresh blood and a new energy. If Stockton stays I’m not worried about the defense. We had big holes he got plugged really well by conference season so I think he’ll be able to do that again. do have wonder why all these guys feel the need to jump ship now right after the coach they purport to love so much got a reprieve, like they wanted. Not sure it speaks too well for the stability with Neu. Seems to be a lack of belief. Conversely, if a lot of these guys land “up” it validates the recruiting has been good. The key is always the QB. If Semonza becomes what we think he’ll be that’ll be a step forward. Still gotta find some top talent on the outside he can throw to. Cooper will be back. (New Oc gonna have to be a strong personality to keep egos in check). A strong OC will imprint his philosophy on the team and establish an actual identity, which we did not have the last 3 years. And I’m not sure Kev had real command over the players. At any rate, Mike will either prove he’s got what it takes to stabilize things and move us forward, or he’ll be done after next year and Mitchell can make his move and make his signature hire. I’m just hoping this near miss will shake Mike out of his comfort zone and get him more involved in how his team plays on game day. Less cheerleader, more manager.

Look at you, and your absurd optimism. Those of us who are realists know that we can surely expect secret option c, which is a 6-7 record (we squeak into a bowl game and lose), which is just enough to make it a tough decision for the AD. Then we’ll extend Mike and wont make a bowl the following year.

Not sure it speaks too well for the stability with Neu. Seems to be a lack of belief. Conversely, if a lot of these guys land “up” it validates the recruiting has been good. It says little about stability or loyalty and more about the reality of NIL. And how portal transfers are so much easier and without cost of sitting out. NIL trumps loyalty. I can't fault the good players who leave for a payday, or for that matter anyone who leaves for playing time when it has become so easy to leave. It doesn't mean we should like this change though.
The reason to have NIL and easy transfer was to prevent hardship to players who were not able to live on scholarship money, not able to work off season, in many ways not fairly compensated for the required commitment. It allowed athletes freedom to seek PT. I am all for players who make such a huge commitment to their sport to share the wealth when they see the money made for their labor go to the University. There was a justification for change. Especially at big schools the money problem was way out of hand.
At mid majors the money issue was much less, we don't make money, but the hardship was still a decent argument.
But.
The result unfortunately is the hardship still exists for mid major athletes. At our level we see only a few players benefit from NIL and the majority are not better off.
On top of it we have dealing with a merry go round of player transfer added to a coaches duties which doesn't make the game better. In fact it exacerbates the issues of have and have not in sport, Coach and AD are now spending inordinate time raising money to fight an arms race instead of working to improve the lot of the Program and athletes in other ways.
Don't kid yourself, anyone, this creates competition among FBS schools, but it is only competition for money where mid majors simply cannot win. I'm happy to see coaches and Programs compete on the field, in recruiting, in making their schools help athletes succeed in finding academic benefits. This change deemphasizes that. Worse. I do not see the reasons for the changes being remedied.

Wasn't he supposed to be the heart of this team? Kinda gives you a picture as to why we haven’t done anything since 2020 when your supposed “rocks” start jumping ship. I'm not sure that isn't true everywhere at our level.
It certainly shows that what used to be the big factors in coaching, things like good recruiting, success in player development, creating a good locker room is now trumped by financial incentives we can't match.
Whether we do better than most our peers in the MAC seems to me to different. Everybody at our level will have that problem, some MAC schools slightly less I suppose. To be better than the rest, we have to be equal or better in all areas including NIL.
Doing so on a consistent basis is going to be harder than it was without the new variable since we are not funded above average.

This is a question that is not getting asked enough. Some of the reasons guys departed was not because of lack of belief but 1) because they couldn't take him at his word on their role and opportunities 2) he couldn't/wouldn't hold some players accountable. And if it's true that the RB coach was let go, that should require some explaining because last I checked the running backs were the strength of the offense the last few years.

I have read in a number of posts that said fans are looking forward to a new look for the team next year with Neu at the helm. What in the world would make anyone think Neu will change horses in the middle of the stream, become a genius and turn a new OC loose with free rein to dazzle the MAC with an innovative offensive scheme? NOT...Get ready for more boring mediocre football...in 365 days we will be asking the same questions.
