Right on University Jim!!
He has some very good qualities but the approach accounts for so much!
Was Knight effective, yes in some ways for sure but in today’s world as a player would you prefer to play for Knight or Coach K, Coach Wooden, Coach Self, etc

That goes along with info I have been given. If what I was told is true about who that NIL guy is, his son is no longer with the program and neither is he. Does that mean the NIL left with him? Would you expect "donations" to continue if you were attempting to buy players to play with your kid and your kid is no longer in the program?

I reached out to the new AD a couple months ago and was told they were actively working on NIL. He did not offer further details. It looks as if at least the stars of the football team are getting get some sort of pay/nil but nothing extravagant outside of maybe a few handpicked chosen ones.. The use of star maybe wrong it might be better just to say handpicked kids are getting NIL with a couple/few getting the bulk share... Now the bulk share may be pennies compared to other schools I dont know
As far as I know unless feed the bird is still active there is no grassroots way for "fans" to contribute.

As for me, I hope Big Ben stays. IMO, Big Ben was a solid sub in the middle. He showed he could score, could rebound and was fairly good D in the paint. He’s a keeper, there are several losers who should go however.

Was Knight effective, yes in some ways for sure but in today’s world as a player would you prefer to play for Knight or Coach K, Coach Wooden, Coach Self, etc Good point, but our choice is Coach Lewis or Coach Whitford. I thought Whit was much better than he got credit for here. And players would no doubt prefer him. He may be have been the better recruiter, we don't know yet. But. I think Lewis has a better chance to get good or decent teams to win in Cleveland. Might have done that last year... Whit was not going to win this with this year's team. He didn't win with good or decent recruiting any year. Hell, I'm not sure what recruiting will be like in this NIL era, maybe it's made for Whitford like coaching. I'll still prefer a coach who wants competitive, disciplined teams and will push them. Whit wanted smart, cerebral, skilled players. But like a lot of well liked teachers, he didn't give quite enough hard homework and make them bust their ass for the test.

At this point, I would say any of our NIL money should be used for men’s basketball - but you’d probably be sued for discrimination. All these changes in college sports is ruining the games! Don’t like and at the point of saying, “I just don’t care anymore.” Scholarships and commitment to those who took a chance on you should be enough. Maybe academic scholars should have NIL offers. Hell, all students should have NIL offers. All students are going to college with the hopes of having a good job upon graduation. The number of Ball State athletes going pro and making money off their sports education is very, very, very small! Why should they be treated different than any other scholarship student - THEY SHOULDN'T - honesty, I’m sick of this shit. At the point of saying shut all scholarship sports down and only have club sports!

He’s a keeper, there are several losers who should go however. We didn't expect it, did we. He was a life saver as Doughty gave us nothing. Lewis must have seen it. I'd want him if Jihad is gone and Doughty isn't in the picture. We're not going to likely find two bigs in the portal. Whoever we get will be coming to play, and as soon as we sign one, it gets hard to sell the next. No matter what I want one good post defender who can start. Ben isn't a starter quality guy.

What a difference a year makes! It was about this time last year when we took down the hated Kent State at home to notch our 20th win. I can remember seeing a picture or video of the embrace between Sellers and Coach Lewis post game. It was great to see and I was so excited for BSU's hoops future. We all know that was the peak of our season as we limped to the finish line with injuries and fatigue. Was still excited for the 2023-24 season and even kicked in $1k for Coach's party fund for the students to attend the games.
As has been hashed & rehashed, losing one starter to graduation and three to the portal was tough to swallow. Coach Lewis & his staff failed to replace these departures with equal or better talent, and more importantly failed to add depth. His coaching staff failed to hit the portal hard enough for players ready to contribute, but instead settled on incoming frosh with their remaining scholarships.
I, too, was euphoric over the hiring of Coach Lewis. Even corresponded with then AD Beth Goetz and congratulated her on the hire. Knew her from one of her previous stops. I'm not ready to throw in the towel, but this has been such a disappointing season. I really hope the staff will only sign portal players with any available scholarships. This is going to be a very telling off season for Lewis' tenure. With another loss, I would hope we'll see Middleton and Brown get extended minutes in the remaining games. Along with Jones and maybe Doughty, those are the only other frosh that are worth keeping.

Keep this dynamic in mind as well-- players now have leverage over coaches. They don't have to listen anymore. They can just....leave. Easily. So, Lewis can coach his ass off but if the players don't like it they'll just transfer out. Like we saw after last year. Maybe Lewis could tone it down a little, but then he wouldn't be who he is. I don't want him to be fake and I don't want him or any coach kissing players asses just because a kid could get butt hurt and just bail out. From everything we can tell, Lewis IS a hard ass and gets on his players AND staff because he has high expectations and he's an intense competitor. I mean, the dude went back at Bob Knight. During a game. We went from a totally dispassionate coach who was like a zombie on the sideline and his teams often played that way to a guy who is about ready to bite the head off a pigeon. We wanted that, didn't we? We wanted a passionate coach. Well, we got one. The trick for him will be to find that sweet spot where he can be demanding and have high expectations but not be off putting. Cannot worry about soft kids not being able to handle hard coaching. (and who don't understand coaches who just want to get the maximum out of a player) The harder trick is recruiting kids he knows can handle it and WANT to be coached that way. Want to be driven and pushed to be their best at whatever they do. Lewis often talks about teaching those guys about life. Life ain't fair. Adapt and adjust. Deal with it. Overcome. (sounds like the Marines) Bottom line, the best coaches find a way to adjust to the environment, to what they have and how each roster needs to be coached. Finding guys who are on board and are willing to dig deep are the ones who'll play well for a coach like Lewis because they desperately want to win. We'll know soon enough if Lewis can do that. There's a difference between being fake and purposefully adapting to better suit the situation. In what environment is getting in someone's face and screaming your head off at them acceptable? Especially in public. I think in most situations if you did that to someone you'd be fired pretty quickly. What makes it acceptable for a coach to create a hostile intimidating environment for the players to work in? Because it happened with other coaches in the past? If who you are doesn't fit success in your job then you're in the wrong job. He needs to purge all this immature bullshit. I believe he has a lot to offer and it would be just stupid to let that derail him. I don't disagree with that.

Lewis didn't fail to hit the portal hard enough. He got burned by the new reality of kids bolting at any moment. Coleman leaves in late July and Sellers sometime in late April as I recall. That netted us Yuri, Brown and Middleton. I think he got Coleman's schollie. I agree with most that he needs to dial back his short fuse for his health sake and to prevent driving kids out we want to keep. I'm not sure he will do that though. He's not a compromiser and it's ingrained in his nature and background. I think he figures he will get the right guys and go down swinging his way or no way. No special insight to this just my uneducated opinion.

If Doughty gets in the weight room and puts up a lot of shots this Summer I think he has the potential to be a stud!!
I not sure he will dial it back either Reality but he should!!

If Doughty gets in the weight room and puts up a lot of shots this Summer I think he has the potential to be a stud!! His foot needs to be 100% healed and the way he’s been walking in his boot even after a couple months of rehab is kinda concerning. He’s really been favoring that foot.
