"Aesthetic additions to Scheumann Stadium and a lighting project at Worthen Arena headline projects Mitchell and his team spearheaded during year one of his tenure" They replaced the banners on the pressbox at Scheumann. He was not the driving force behind the Worthen lighting replacement. Gonzo Barajas, the sports facilities head, made that happen. The tv people complained that the yellow lights looked like garbage on ESPN, and they were replaced under warranty. There are a few other things in the article that are not quite right, but either the reporter was misinformed, or made wrong assumptions.

Verbal Commits shows Micah Bell as a transfer to South Plains College; JC in Levelland, Texas. Of the 7 who transferred out, only Trent Middleton and Joey Brown have yet to announce their next location. Anyone else, other than me, starting to wonder if Trent Middleton might return to BSU? I think Lewis would welcome him back.

Interesting idea, but I thought Middleton had headed closer to home.
He improved over the year, had upside.

He visited Robert Morris but didn’t sign. Verbal commits has him as unsigned.

He visited Robert Morris but didn’t sign. Verbal commits has him as unsigned. A player waiting on something as many seem to be. Maybe on some program where he isn't first choice for them, maybe he has offers he's waiting on a visit with, maybe waiting on grades from BSU which should now be out. A lot of players out there uncommitted.

I personally liked Middleton, but I think Lewis was done with him by the end of the season.

It seems to me there is currently a general lull across the nation in portal signings. After the initial wave of players who knew exactly where they were going to go as soon as they entered the portal, and after schools splashed the money on players they really wanted.
Seems like everyone is taking stock of their remaining funds, and the free market that now exists will play out gradually through the off season.

over time we've signed some really good players very late so I'm confident we'll end up with talent with the spots we have open.

Then again, based on the last 24 years of experience, Ball State basketball could be preparing yet another good hard kick to the nuts of its steadily aging, ever-dwindling, braindead fanbase. (that would be us).

Agreed. Huggy Bear and Bik Gill come to mind. Almost forgot Chase Brogna. Damn. The memories come flooding back at the mention of those names. Huggy hit campus from the hills of Kentucky and almost immediately struck fear in opposing centers with his man bun perm, but it wasn’t until Whitford dubbed him the most fearsome alligator in Africa that his legend was solidified. Unfortunately, he Googled alligator habitats and discovered they aren’t indigenous to that continent and lost his confidence and his scoring average plummeted from 2.3 pts to 1.9 and he was never the same. Bik Gill was a late addition from Greece or Turkey or one of the Stans, no one really knew. Fans quickly discovered that his distinction was that he traveled more than Anthony Bordain. He mastered the Euro step step step step almost from his first game and aptly earned the nickname The Toaster since he was a turnover machine. He also had the shooting touch of a blacksmith with Bells Palsy and became the bane of the maintenance staff. Gill broke almost as many backboards as Shaq but did so with a jump shot which is much harder to do. If the transfer portal was around in his brief stint, he would have transferred to another sport. And then there was Chase Brogna. The name itself says 70’s era mens cologne or maybe an Italian sports car but he was neither of those things. He was listed as an all state player from Texas, of all places but in reality he was basically Ollie from Hoosiers, except he didn’t shoot free throws underhanded, as far as we know. I’m not sure he shot any because opposing teams typically ignored him so he didn’t get to the line much. He lasted one season as I recall and shipped out to parts unknown. These three late in the game Whitford finds were diamonds in the rough that turned out to be lumps of coal. I have more confidence that Lewis will be able to coax a little better sleeper into Worthen, although Bell and Adams were pretty much nonexistent in their two years here on a very short handed roster. Middleton was fairly competent for a freshman. Wish he would have stayed but who knows what we may find in the proverbial portal junk drawer.
