I understand all those dynamics…however, a couple of factors:
- if you’re telling me (as a potential head coach like Stockton or Faulkner) who my OC is going to be as a condition of hire, that’s going to be a huge problem. I could go to Central Michigan or Kent State, and some other places, and assemble my staff the way I want to. - Elliott’s success as a play-caller has a lot to do with Koziol who has saved Semonza from a slew of INT’s this year. Again, film doesn’t lie. Koziol is either going to be on an NFL roster or getting a huge NIL deal somewhere else - If it’s true that Neu turned the play-calling over to Elliott he should also take a lot of blame for the late-game play calling. I have yet to hear anybody on this board defend that BS (we needed 5-7 yards for a game-winning field goal and you threw it 3 straight times) we saw the last couple of games where it clearly looked like they were coaching towards individual performances - a few players said the Miami and Buffalo defenses said the same thing to them after the game: we couldn’t believe you didn’t run the ball more - if I’m Mitchell I want a complete re-set on the coaching front. If you take a king out of the castle and put him in a circus, he’s not a king anymore, he’s a clown. Neu deserves a ton of credit for building a fantastic player culture but the same can’t be said for the coaching culture at Ball State. And to beat a dead horse, a lot of these coaches failed Mike. - generally speaking, players and/or their parents should not be dictating what we do or holding us hostage. A lot of these players are/have departed already. In the past, we’ve accommodated these demands and they still left for an NIL deal or were kicked off the team because they thought they were running the show. If you want to leave, so be it. The portal will allow us to build quickly.

Koziol, who will be in the portal or NFL draft after the season, made Semonza look better than his reality. Even with Koziol, Semonza was ranked 81st QB in FBS.

This isn’t the NBA so you cannot let players dictate who’s HC and who’s on the staff. Yeah, we might lose a ton of kids but the new HC needs complete control over his staff. And it’s not great to have kids loyal to an assistant but not the HC. That just doesn’t work. We definitely need a complete reset of the program. If the new hire is worth a damn he’ll find a way to overcome players leaving. All I want from the kids is they give the new man a listen before they decide to stay or bail.

I 100% agree with just about everything you said Im just repeating what Ive been told this best Way I can And I know that, Rob. Your insights are always fantastic. I hope you understood my reference to you wasn’t referring to you specifically. I predict the real story that’s going to come out is not going to be about Mike, it’s going to be this coaching staff and the BS they were doing. I hinted at this earlier in the season…if even a third of it’s true, you have to have a complete reset…no more shadow HC’s, no more failing players and losing games because of your personal agenda…if Elliott stays because that is what the new guy wants fine but if the choice is forced upon him then we’re going to be back at the circus.

And this isn't the first year we've heard about this kind of bull shit coming from assistant coaches while Mike has been our HC. TOTAL REBOOT.

Trying to add this without adding this... A name already mentioned says if a former recent coach is brought back and current coach is retained he and others will 100% stay
If another coach already listed above with a ties from years ago comes back he would likely stay if a coach is retained
Now the best chance for the above to happen would be Stockton keeping elliot.. Stockton def minded Elliot offensive minded already worked together etc.
Faulkner I would say no way unless its written in which then in turn may make him so no
No way a brand new coach does this unless he is a puss so we wouldnt want him anyway

The biggest reason Faulkner is so appealing to me is because he comes from that Tomlin school which emphasizes culture over everything else…it’s why Tomlin has been so successful for so long and this program desperately needs that approach…maybe Stockton brings that element as well…I still feel like a whole reset is needed…

If the new hire is worth a damn he’ll find a way to overcome players leaving. All I want from the kids is they give the new man a listen before they decide to stay or bail. I'd hope you are right that players give a new coach a chance to win them over. But that will be a big job unless that HC can bring in assistants right away to help with that.
Assistants always have great influence on players. They work together every day. They make the go, no go decisions that most directly impact the player. The HC just doesn't have that kind of player contact, or determine the players future as much.
We've had a HC or two that were really connected to players, and as a motivator and team leader that worked well with Brady Hoke at times. But we've also had HCs who were downright distant. At real FBS level the HC is probably as much chief executive as coach, usually a strong personality that the players respect and want to impress. But even there the assistants probably make the decisions that count. Other than maybe the ultimate NIL decision that is now so much of a player's decision to come or go.
Our FB operation is just not the same on many levels as the real FBS schools in the P4. We don't have the same quality of staff in any way, and we don't have a PR and executive function that should take up the attention of the HC. The HC probably just has to be more hands on and involved, he can't really count on top assistants or position coaches to be excellent. They need development and guidance as much as do the players...
We roundly criticized Mike Neu's failings in delegating control on offense, and it was perhaps optimistic, but we all assumed we'd see his influence create great QB play in a league where the QB makes such a big difference. We sure didn't see as much of that as we wanted.
Having said all that, in the NIL era we are going to see our quality players recruited heavily and our HC will have a big disadvantage trying to keep those player in not having a personal relationship or the deep pocket. Many other players will see uncertainty in their future with new staff and HC, and i t is now so very easy to move on. We can't avoid that, probably should put our hopes in a new HC being very lucky in the portal rather than being a guy who can keep players.

I saw earlier someone mention Semonza and that he was 81st qb in the country.. Thats likely much better than we are going to get out of the portal or be able to recruit remember he was a freshman.
During one of the games this year the announcers were really hyping Semonza.. It got me thinking so I went through and totaled up Semonzas numbers through his first 12 games. 4 frpm last year 8 this and sent only the numbers to card fan and asked whose numbers are these.. Cardfan texts back wenning I then sent wennings numbers through 12.. Its not close Semonza is better in every category hands down by alot.
It was shocking but true.. I guess we fall into remembering the jr/sr version of players and compare it to what we are seeing as a freshman.. Wenning did not become wenning till his JR year
GP COM AT INT YARDS TD LON % YD % ypg enning freshman year stats 2010 2010 12 128-235-14 1373 14 63 54.5 5.8 114.4 111.3 sEMONZA THROUGH 10 THIS YEAR 2024 10 227 343 10 2360 20 72 .66 10.4 236.0

Did they like him? As a man, sure; as a coach, the majority did not accordingly to locker room sources. There’s enough pride there that effort for these last two games should not be an issue. As I said in another post the stories will start to come out.. I can confirm what Jdawg is saying most if not all liked even loved Mike and Kev as people but much like us realized as coaches they were not very good... Now we have a diff prob this current team seems to love elliot as a coach/plsycaller.. If we want to keep at least the core new coach will need to retain elliot. They seem firm on this Let them all leave. Really, how much worse can it get?
