I like the kid's thinking in that I look at both Valpo & Eville as examples both get their big guys from Europe. They are not superstars but they can play at a midmajor program. The other big plus is they don't seem to have grade problems & graduate. I agree with halftime on Whit's timeouts & while I think he is still generally out coached in game situations he is improving. I see Persons as tired probably from being the primary ball handler & shooter. The head injury may be a factor but even if it is we need to get Ish in the game with him more especially with Walker gone. I see us as having to recreate our team midseason without Walker regarding playing time at guard. It will show us a great deal about the coach based on his success in doing that. While Gunn is not a ball handler even his return keeps others stronger

Most coaches likely know what their team will play like on game day from the practice the day before the game. Whit wasn't likely surprised by the Cards lack of intensity before the game with the Bulls. Losing Walker didn't help with the line up or the team's psyche. Don't know about the game at Western; hard to think the opponent will hit eight of their first nine shots, many of them from long distance. I do agree with HT that a time out should have been taken earlier than it was.
This team, at this time, really needs some senior leadership. Sellers plays with very good effort, going to the floor for the loose balls. Kiapway and Tyler just do not appear to lead in any way, though Tyler could by making a couple of big plays lead by example.
Go Cards!

Recruiting Indiana is good. But we aren’t getting the athletes/playmakers we need so we ought to branch out a little bit. True, if we really can't find what we need I'd favor going out of state, but I'd also say we aren't developing the athletes we get. Based on Sellers' freshman year he could have been an all-star type player, but he regressed his sophomore and junior years. Teague is being coached into a perimeter shooter. Tyler never broke out like we all know he could have. Kiapway's senior year has been his worst (at least it feels like it, I don't have the stats but I used to be confident when he'd jump and now I'm not). Is Mallers the only player that has shown significant improvement?

Sellers has improved his game in many respects, not just shooting. He is much more active on the defensive end, going for rebounds and steals. The teams in the MAC know just how to defend him after three years. Agree with you on Kiapway. Tyler has always been inconsistent, but when he plays well, good things happen for the team.
Go Cards!

I just cannot believe having and encouraging Teague to shoot 3’s is his highest and best use. A part of his game? Sure. But not 6 a game. He’s got to be around the lane moving and slashing and getting offensive boards. Whit is TOO married to a perimeter oriented game. We aren’t shooting well this year so adjust something!

Something that bothers me is that we have 5 scholarship players currently not playing.
1. Jontrell Walker - indefinitely suspended
2. Zach Gunn - injured
3. Brachen Hazen - Arkansas transfer
4. K.J. Walton - Missouri transfer
5. Blake Huggins - freshman redshirt
Almost half of our scholarship players are currently not playing!

College basketball is a fickle, fickle B. Not long ago, some folks were worried where Whit was heading next year.

Maybe the U should temporarily pull Rob from his football duties and assign him to basketball recruiting? Just a thought.

At present our recruiting is setting us up for a complete disaster in 2019-20, and unlike many here I don't believe next season is going to be anything special. Also I suppose since no one else has hit on it yet I will. Why do so many of our players look ten pounds overweight, flabby, and appear gassed before the first scheduled timeout ?

Recruiting, game management, philosophy....all legit gripes IMO. I also would like to add this...player development. Sellers, Moses, Teague, Kip, and Tyler have really not matured well in this program. Fundamentals are weak across the board. Though the failure to recruit is major, I think the lack of development of our players should also be there in any critique of Whit.

Don't get me started on our strength and conditioning guy. The physical growth of our guys is awful. The last guys who really transformed themselves were Juwan Scaife and Jarrod Jones. Moses I guess changed his body pretty dramatically from his senior year in high school to when he came in as a freshman but I think that was him, not our staff. I agree I think all of our guys look soft in comparison to some of the other teams we play. I get some of it is genetic but we don't seem to progress much in four years with our guys at least from the eye test.
I would also add the Walton and Hazen both look more cut than our players. Is that by accident or because they were both in a high-level program prior to coming here?
