While many of us (including yours truly) get frustrated at the volatile nature and sometimes frenetic style of our leader, just a little statistical perspective as I was perusing career stats for some of our past and present players.
Tayler in his not yet completed two years as a a Cardinal has:
Scored 908 points Dished 281 assists to 189 turnovers Grabbed 221 rebounds Shot .473 from the field, .404 from deep and .746 from FT line Hit more buzzer beaters in two years than anyone in recent memory
These are BSU only numbers. If you add in his freshman year at N. Kentucky he already has 1300 points and 393 dimes and we have at least six games left to play.
He he still drives me nuts at times but there’s no denying he is on track to be an all-timer. He lacks one thing on his resume to attain that status. You know what that is. #dance

I agree we give him a lot of shit for things and some of it is well deserved but we are a better team with him. We will miss him when he is gone and I would imagine years from now someone will mutter we need a player like Persons.

It's easy to picture him on a Hunsaker team

Yeah he’s a hunsaker type player. A bigger more physical Jamie Mathews. I’d rather have Tayler than not have him.
His hair? Eh.

His hair is pretty epic. Sure beats the man-bun Moses was rocking a few weeks ago.

I was sitting near the Akron section of our game at worthen. I ended up talking with some Akron fans(they were really Groce friends from Illinois) A guy turned around and says "that Persons kid looks like the guy who you would buy drugs from on the street corner" We chatted some more and Persons had a "moment" where he did his hands gestures and said "f you" to someone. I told the guy that is why most opposing teams/players/coaches hate him. The guy goes not me that what we call the F you attitude at my house and I love it. Im not sure what my point is but I guess its all just a matter of perspective.

Perspective. Persons will likely be remembered. Surely will be if we win a championship.
Others on the team will have some good records before they are done.
Sellers will end up with a career record. Kiapway is high on the list.
Trey Moses is climbing the list in several categories. He's only 40 rebounds away from Lonnie, a player remembered from the past. Will end up quite high in most rebounding catagories at this pace. Way up on FG%. Will score a lot of points.
Teague could move up. Two more years...
Mallers looks like he'll be in the books, he is way up on the FT% chart which I had not realized.

They watch him once or twice a year and if they have watched lately he has been a beast. We have seen the entire body of work which at times has not been as beastly. What ever he has been doing these last few games though he needs to keep it up

He is the heart and soul of this team. He is also the least liked by opponents and their fans.

Persons' stats for the Cards this season compared to last season:
Overall FG% -- 46.5 vs 47.9 --Worse 3-pt FG% ----- 38.6 vs 41.9 --Worse FG Attempts ---12.2 vs 11.2 --More 3-pt FG Attempts 3.2 vs 3.1 --More/Even In both cases he's shot more but with less accuracy
FT Attempts --- 2.9 vs 4.5 --- Less FT %------------71.1 vs 76.3 --Worse Less trips to the line coupled with less accuracy
Overall Scoring --14.7 vs 15.5 -- Worse Rebs per game--- 3.5 vs 3.9 ---- Worse Assists per game- 4.4 vs 4.9 ---- Worse Steals per game -- .9 vs 1.3 ---- Worse Turnovers/game --3.2 vs 3.1 --- Worse/Even Assist-TO ratio --- 1.37 vs 1.58 -Worse (and actually it's 1.28 this year since first 2 games)
He basically hasn't shown any statistical improvement from last year in any meaningful category. The only ones that would be slightly up is that he's committed 2 less fouls (66 to 68) and blocked 2 more shots (4 compared to 2) but those are hardly worth mentioning.
Obviously his late-game heroics are worth mentioning and we could have a record of 14-12 instead of 17-9 had he not come through in the clutch. But I'm not fond of the attitude that often comes out, and I feel like if he doesn't hit those 3 end-of-game shots, we'd be blaming Persons' decline as one of the big reasons the season was a disappointment.

I just think he WILL, sooner or later, next year if not this year, cost us with that attitude. Some sort of technical foul where he either mouths off or gestures to another player or an official. He's certainly demonstrated the antics, but just has ever, either gotten caught or gone over the line. It will happen and I just hope it doesn't cost us a game.
