I knew Schnatter very well back in school. The guy had many flaws, like all of us do, but the guy was no racist.

I usually disagree with Whitlock, but he's dead on with this one.
Schnatter wasn't calling anyone "TNW" (I feel like I can't even type the words "the N word" without getting in trouble), he was referencing what he thought Colonel Sanders called black people.
People refuse to see the context, mainly because Schnatter is on the right side of the political spectrum. Plus there's the accusation from Schnatter that this PR firm was blackmailing him.
By most accounts, Schnatter is kind of a jerk, but he's not an idiot. He got played, I think, by either the PR firm, or the board.

It was all context that was overlooked. Sounds like the PR firm basically tried to extort. Pay us more or we talk kind of thing. Schnatter is an asshat and cannot express himself well at all other than sell pizza, but I do not at all think he's racist or that what he said was racist. He should have not used the actual word, but cmon, he was just trying to throw the Colonel into the deep fryer, not call people that word.

When KFC was a single entity (i.e. early '90s, well before TriCon Global & Yum Brands took over), I had KFC as one of my customers. At the time, some of the staff had been around in the late 1960s and 1970s and remember Colonel Sanders still coming into the office. There was a deep fear of him when word got out that he was in the building. He would lash out at folks. If your desk wasn't kept neat, you may get his walking cane slammed down on your desk and verbally assaulted. He was a sexist, and made no bones about it. I never heard any employees refer to him being a racist, but it's not out of the realm of possibility based on his other treatment of folks. Let's put it this way, older employees stated that when he died in 1980, not too many of them were upset.

BOT letter issued which keeps his name on the Institute.
Recognizes some will disagree but cites arguments above to say that in light of his regret and the context of the use of the N word, they will not take action.

They stood up to the calls for removal and in this case I agree with them. The rest of the world needs to understand context and what people truly mean and not how they may have butchered trying to say it.
And added to that context is that PR firm trying to essentially extort money for silence.

Totally agree with the BOT decision and sent a note to Rick Hall whom I have known since his student days and member of the Majerus led basketball team.
I let him know I appreciated the BOT’s thoughtfulness on this etc. etc. - they got it right!
Want to give a “shout out” to Jason Whitlock for publicly expressing his thoughts via the Indy Star and elsewhere!

The thing is that John is a public figure and this is not 1950 and he is NOT quite Colonel Sanders anyway.
Not just the Nword in any context. That story about Indiana's past is surely true, but after all that is more than a few years ago, not comprehensible to so many of his public, and he surely doesn't want to in any way associate that history with his business!
He, as he admits, should have spoken differently. As a matter of professionalism in business as well as legal and PR considerations.

I am sorry guys but if just using a word in a conversation should not be this big of a deal. Has society became so soft that just hearing a word spoken really hurts anyone... Pussification of America at its finest

We can say stiffies all we want!
John needs to be better at communicating, and think before he speaks. But this particular case was way over blown imo. Bsu will take serious heat, but they understand that. Gotta ride out the storm and look better for it down the road.

Pussification of America at its finest Watch out, the Social Justice Warriors (which sounds like a really, REALLY lame-ass superhero league) will bully you via social media until you comply. One of the major reasons I've steered away from social media. It's just full of people bitching about some perceived slight they're offended by. It got to be too much after the election, although it was entertaining for a while to see all the melting snowflakes.
