I hope so Cardfan....I would not bet the house though...I really do think the two out are killing us and I'm not sure where Mallers has gone? I hope so too. It could be that water has found it's level with Mallers. He just might not be good enough.

I have never been so apathetic about Ball State sports than I am right now. Football bad. Basketball is sleepwalking through the season. You keep waiting for that special season (and I am not talking about a 29-3 season) and you keep waiting and waiting and waiting. As long as Whit is satisfied though at the 1-3 MAC record and 2 losses at home, then we good.

It’s not this loss in particular. We did play better and had a chance to win. Rather, it’s a subset of yet another losing streak during which the same ol symptoms of carelessness, sloppy play, and galling lack of effort once again rear their ugly heads. It’s not one loss, it’s 3, including two at home. It’s the predictability of what the coach will say. It’s the predictably if his teams doing it every year. The only variation is when it happens. But we can always count on it. That’s the biggest thing for me and not just the loss last night. Especially with a team that two weeks ago looked like the second best in the league. OK, but you are griping about this game. I agree that because it is part of a 3 game losing streak does make it hurt more.
The emotional response I get. I think you realize every team is going to have a bad games, and most will have bad stretches. Until we are just a little better we don't eliminate the stretches. And until we agree we may even lose multiple games in a row. Whitford says he is worried more about the bad play, less about the losses. I agree there. We were the second best team when we had the whole roster ready, may not be without. We looked better than we were against Toledo, worse than we are against Ohio. That is what Whitford said after Ohio. Accurately.
As far as the emotional ups and downs we suffer I see that even a very slight difference in how we play would mean we could agree to gripe about a bad week last week but would be 2-1 today and probably both be much happier.
I don't really see what you expect the coach to say different, though.
I have no clue what the hell you are saying in the 2nd paragraph. Made my head hurt. I would point out though that your pontificating continues to use a lot of woulds and coulds and ifs which is pretty typical when trying to get someone to swallow your justification juice. Regarding your last line, I would expect the coach to give fans some credit for having eyes and be honest, for example, We played better, our effort was better, we competed hard but that wasn't good enough. We have to be better and losing will never be acceptable as long as I'm the coach. We are here to win a championship and generally speaking, given comparable talent, the tougher team usually prevails. We need to develop a tougher mindset and that's something we will work on. That would buy a lot of equity from your fan base without throwing your players under the bus. Problem is I don't think we've recruited players who have that kind of mindset. I believe we are determined and hustle but that's different than being tough and having attitude. Persons has it and no one else. That's not enough, IMO.

If the head coach doesn’t take losing personally then why would players?

Process and developing a culture is fine to talk about in year 1 for a coach, even yr 2 for that matter. By year 6 talking about being happy with process starting 1-3 after losing 2 straight at home is an excuse and 95% board can see it as such. Years 4-forward are about results especially with a jr/sr laden starting lineup.

Not so many coaches on the first part. I may have missed a Bob Knight or Gene Keady press conference once or twice though.
The Rocky marathon, that one I just don't believe you, but in today's day, I suppose it's possible.
What and What.. I hear coaches say we played like garbage all the time.(this could be a football thing though as that is where most of statement was coming from) If you can not watch Rocky and be inspred to take a run up some steps or across the beach then shock the world you have no pulse "Garbage" they can get away with. Like I said I am not familiar with movie picks of coaches, Rocky might be right...but I can hear this board erupt at Whit's poor taste in movies whatever film he recommends. Probably would be The Seventh Seal...

Probably would be The Seventh Seal... No, it would be the Matrix. Everyone lays in a liquid pod and their minds are fed with a steady stream of alternate reality bullsh*t. Then Morpheus Reality Check extracts you from the Matrix and you realize that the real world is a desolate wasteland controlled by Agent Smithford.

"At the end of the day, you build confidence through doing hard things over and over and over,” said the coach (Brad Stevens). “Because that’s your focus. That’s your intent. Your job is your focus. You know what you’re supposed to do. You perform every assignment, you do it physically, you do it tough, and then all of a sudden, the ball goes in. It’s just kind of funny how it works. "If you don't do the tough things, even the easy things seem difficult! It's all relative." “I had an old friend that was one of the best NAI coaches ever and coached for 34 years in the state of Indiana, and his phrase that his team used was, ‘The game honors toughness.’ And boy, is that true.” www.celticslife.com/2018/11/brad-stevens-to-his-players-game-honors.html

After six seasons I can't point to one positive identifying trait and say "now that's Ball State Basketball"..................

Its like only playing PowerBall when it gets to half a billion......still the same odds as football and basketball.

I will remind us even me that we were on a pretty good winning streak until we went to a short bench...hopefully, Ish and Hazen are back soon.
