According to Pomeroy , Valpo is ranked 22nd in the country , this would be the first time since 2010 Butler team played us that a top 25 team would be in Worthern arena ... by the way Pomeroy has us at 179 .....

Quite hard to play a top 25 team when your pre conference schedule features IU........K.......not to mention Long Duc Dong......er....I mean Longwood.

The Cards have recently been schooled on "how to win" per the advice of many on this board. THAT alone should be worthy of staying within 30 of a nationally ranked team.

Valpo is like Butler in that they are an Indiana school that has limitations similar to BSU's, and whose success makes BSU look notably stupid by comparison. I don't know a ton about Valpo, but a glance at their roster shows they are working the international player angle. As I remember, they have been doing this for a while. Butler, meanwhile, has found success and fame by pulling that strange and inscrutable tactic of hiring good coaches. Of course, neither school is shackled to a football program that loses 7 figures every year...which is something of an advantage.
Anyway, weird things happen in sports, and if we hit around 15 threes, who knows what might happen? But, of course, you probably need at least 30 or so attempts to get that, and I don't know if you can get that many if you spend a lot of possessions running your super magic motion plays, cunningly designed to isolate your 6-4, short-armed, primary inside scoring threat against their 6-10 guys underneath.

Some good observations General.
I believe to be in a position to win today, we must outbound Valpo, which is a very tough chore given their size...we also must play terrific Defense....WE DO BOTH OF THESE THINGS WELL, and in my view we could have a shot!!! Hold them below 40% from the field!

Well, Butler — doing it the Butler Way and hiring from within the "family" – did hire a bad coach just a few years ago but, fortunately for Butler, that ended quickly. Somehow, they happened to have a former Big South Coach of the Year sitting on their bench as an assistant. So, even though they were screwed by the timing of the bad coach's departure, they somehow ended up landing in a field of daisies. You can say that's planning or having the money to hire good assistants, but I'd suggest that that's really just camping out under a lucky star.

You want some optimism, The stars are going to align today and we pull off a shocker. Tyler busts out, Sellers and Weber Combine for 10-14 from three and the hidden star of the game is Nate Wells who gets 7 rebounds, 4 offensive with a timely putback. If none of this happens I have plenty of excuses so its cool

A classic example of my old football coach's favorite saying: "Luck is where preparation meets opportunity."

Butler has a long tradition of beating national powers going back to Tony Hinkle. That football thing is a big help in resources and they have exploited the advantage of Indiana basketball tradition and using Indiana players better than anyone with the possible exception of IU in Bob Knight's tenure. Butler had some glory wins including a couple against ND with a roster of small town Indiana HS players. Evansville was another Indiana school that surprised a few teams.
Valpo and their Euro basketball, a good run with a coach who established the program, a pretty good fan base for a school that size, they are an outlier in college basketball.
It does show a mid major can become a fringe national power. Louisville even made it into a real power from obscurity, but more like Butler they had a lot more going for that than Valpo, with an urban University that had fan base, and in Louisville's case some growth potential based on that urban environment, potential which they have managed well as an institution, even being able now to support football at a major college level.
None of those things looks likely at BSU where we are mid major all the way. If we want a nationally prominent sports program it has to be basketball, and probably has to happen despite the expense of football. We do have some alumni base for support, but not connected and not much help in attendance.

What is it with the number 15 around here? The Kid, 15 wins. The General, 15, 3 pointers,. (by the way) , it will take more than 30 attempts for us to hit 15 from 3 point land. I want the Cards to win but I just feel that there is a little too much optimism on this board concerning this team. That, in turn, leads to a huge let down when they don't live up to these overly rosy predictions. Valpo is ranked at the lower part of a poll. If the poll is 40 point off we still get our clocks cleaned by the Crusaders. Valpo 85 Ball State 56.
