Maybe Peyton’s ability to play General Manager isn’t what the Colts need.
All the “pieces” will be gone by the time Indianapolis cycles through the leagues cast away QBs

Maybe Peyton’s ability to play General Manager isn’t what the Colts need. All the “pieces” will be gone by the time Indianapolis cycles through the leagues cast away QBs Maybe the strategy of using quarterbacks who were no longer wanted by their previous team is not the best. Maybe it gives you someone with name recognition, and maybe it could even work with really shrewd scouting. But that Chris Ballard...really smart guy....he's got a pro bowl left guard and a pro bowl long snapper on the roster!

But he surely gambled and lost on the OL this year, with no move except LG working out this year.

But he surely gambled and lost on the OL this year, with no move except LG working out this year. Not sure what happened on the line. They've been very good the last few years, but after Castonzo retired, there was a little dropoff. Then Doyle retired, and that seems to have changed the chemistry completely. Kelly and Smith have had nagging injuries, Pinter is overmatched anywhere but center, and Raimann... ugh.

I'm done with Reich and Ballard. They've proven that as a combo they cannot build and coach a true contender. Ballard drafted some good pieces and got a couple good free agents and players via trade, but, his great love, the Oline is a massive fail now. that was his entire deal--it's all starts up front and that's where we're gonna invest. We'll just be able to plug in any QB and do fine. Welp.....

But he surely gambled and lost on the OL this year, with no move except LG working out this year. Wrong. Loading huge 1st round draft resources and salary cap at the lowest-value positions and relying on wishful thinking at the vital LT position is simply stupid...not unlucky. Pryor plus a 7th round pick was acquired for a 6th round pick. figure out his value from that. Raimann was a third round pick with injury concerns. "Gambled and Lost"? More like "Asking for big trouble and getting it". The colts O line is currently ranked #30. I'll bet you that 25 of the lines ahead of them have had as bad or worse injury issues. 29 are paid less money, and 29 have a better left tackle.

Poll question
Which was the more disastrous QB acquisition, Wentz or Ryan?
I'm leaning towards Ryan.

I'll bet you that 25 of the lines ahead of them have had as bad or worse injury issues. 29 are paid less money, and 29 have a better left tackle. The LT bet on Pryor was based on their experience with him last year where he was adequate, certainly not a disaster. Raimann is a rookie. Will probably be fine. The unexpected decline in their Center, and RT who had played well with extensions is where the money went more than anything. Pinter did not pan out but coaches were happy enough with him in camp The decline at 3 positions and Pinter not stepping up as expected are all coaching evaluation as much as GM decisions. It's possible a couple of those decisions turn out OK. Pryor appears to have regressed to his previous skill level and the GM erred I would agree in not adding something at LT. Other decisions look defensible.

Well, with Wentz, the expectations were lower. Ryan was a more proven commodity, and a "safer" pick, which gave him farther to fall.
Personally, I would have taken Garroppolo over Ryan. Might've paid more, but he also has more in the tank. Or they could've aimed higher and picked up Wilson, but he hasn't looked great in Denver.
This approach of "band-aid QB for a year" won't get them anything, except uncertainty.

Ballard has a lager staff and is paid a lot to get those QB decisions right, and this makes two in a row outright fucking disasters to go along with his cliche-friendly, media charming but stupid "win in the trenches" draft and salary strategy. He needs to get a job where his ability to hit on an occasional 3rd or 5th round find is enough. NFL GM is not such a job.
but as we know from the Grigson/Pagano precedent, Irsay's drug-addled mind is not suited to shrewd, perceptive, timely decisions.

Calculates that the colts have an 11% chance of making the playoffs and a 31% chance of getting a top 5 pick. So, yes, it's that time already. Time to root for colts losses if you are a colts fan and if you have >10 operable brain cells. This is even more true given that the colts have had an enormous, soul-draining hole at the QB position for some time now that only the highest draft capital is likely to fix. Also noted is that the "fifth times a charm" bowl is the 5th most likely super bowl matchup. MN vs Buff. I'm for that, although the odds are only 4.4% at this point. This reminds me that if you like dark offbeat films, you might check out Buffalo '66. Be warned that most people will hate it. A somewhat fictionalized Scott Norwood is a key character.

Good weekend so far. Colts took care of business. Jags won. Lions won. Bucs or Rams will get a win. Root for the Cardinals today and the Saints tomorrow.
Also - while Irsay isn't very bright, I think he is sensitive to being embarrassed. Today could have been an important step towards getting a GM who understands basic principles of roster strategy.

I won't be surprised if Reich and Ballard are gone Monday morning. This is like the ‘80s Colts in their ineptitude.
