Paddock looked good. Recovered well after the first play and looked like a leader the rest of the way. Showed perseverance. Always looking and hoping for a “Nate Davis” talent at QB - Paddock doesn’t have that talent but he has Gabbert-esque (Miami) qualities (shorter QB, but safe passer and solid leadership). We’ll see.
UT may be a good SEC football team (top 5 SEC) - so loaded down there across the conference. MAC teams (or, pick your P5 schools) will always struggle against a good SEC team. I hope UT is good - that’ll make this loss feel a lot better.
This is a big week. WMU looked very good against MSU. And the MAC West is again very, very solid.

Did you just compare a two/three starter with NFL Talent to Paddock who has started 1 game. That’s a big reach at this point

I watched Toledo and Daquan Finn. Finn is really good not a superior passer but athletic and can make something out of nothing. They seem ok with not using a standard typical Qb

I think with gabbert we will see him as a grad transfer his final year. He may not be drafted but he will be in a camp

I like Gabbert. He’s a leader and good football player. I hope he gets a shot.

They seem ok with not using a standard typical Qb Finn is who I imagine Kelly would be similar to. So here's a question: Do Neu and staff favor steadiness and reliability (say Paddock) over more dynamic playmaking ability (say Kelly)? I wonder this as other skill positions also, WR/RB. It seems like we've lost some talented players over the years (Ex: McGaughy) who've been slotted behind others who, while not bad players at all, might not possess dynamic playmaking ability. As fans we love the guys that make the big plays, but maybe other parts of their game aren't up to snuff. And is this a staff that isn't willing to take the risk that might go with those playmakers, instead choosing reliability?

This is the exact response I was hoping to get because I think it’s 100% spot on. Take it further at what point does being reliable become a detriment. Is it ok to and sometimes worth more to have a guy out there who might mess up a route or throw a dumb pass/make a wrong read but then do something amazing or make something out of nothing?

We had snaps to give remember Antwan Davis could his snaps have went to a more dynamic young guy. What about Will Jones now. I’m not knocking jones I’ve said recently he can make a play but can a pemberton or Barfield make the same play Or make that nice steady will jones 10 yard gain a 25 yard scamper… just fuel for discussion

Let’s say you got 3 seniors who have done everything you have asked of them none of them stars but good enough to start. Ones a lb who’s going to give 65 tackles, ones a safety reliable not going to kill ya and lastly a d line man who’s going to fill the position nothing more. All of these guys though are great leaders though. On the bench you have 3 red shirt freshman that can do the exact same thing but maybe are not leaders. Who’s more beneficial to the long term success of a program

And is this a staff that isn't willing to take the risk that might go with those playmakers, instead choosing reliability? This is good. I think that what we’ve been seeing. There are playmakers who don’t play enough because maybe they aren’t as sharp with their assignments as the guys ahead of them who may be less apt to make big plays. The difference in the eyes of the staff being “we can’t have breakdowns due to blown assignments.” Don’t know that to be the case with mcgoughy but we sure could use his talent this year. Our Wrs are “nice” but none of them are gamebreakers like Hall was. Defenses are able to keep our guys in front of them and there isn’t much threat of YAC. SO THE OFFENSE plods rather than strikes. Kelly is athletic and slippery and would probably just make plays, but can he run the offense and hit spots in the passing game better than Paddoc? I do think we’re trading playmaking at all the skill positions for “being in the right spot at the right time, not missing blocks, etc.” in the college game which way is better?

Kelly made a Twitter post a couple days ago that caught my attention. Paraphrasing- Waiting for my chance to play. Ready and patient - believes his time is coming.
Here or somewhere else?

The game was over but all of our running backs got some snaps. Steele and Will can't do it all. Need fresh bodies to keep pounding. However if the O line can't open holes won't make much difference who is the RB. I think our O line is big enough average is over 300. Defensive line smaller but did ok against Tn. run game on several plays.

I'm still leaning toward he'll be in the portal soon. We know Neu sticks with guys even if they aren't performing. I will say that if Paddock looks bad vs WMU that maybe Kelly gets some consideration after that, but who knows. I doubt they want to burn Blazek's redshirt if they don't have to.
