Lol we’ve played two games and lost on the road and half of you are doom and glooming already. This was the first time he’s seen them play against real competition. He will be able to show them film and make adjustments. Long long way to go. Although it's unclear why our past 4 coaches didn't rack up multiple championships over the last 22 years, given that they had they key advantage of so many losses on film to benefit from. This has been a major strength of our program for a long long time. Hopefully Lewis will quickly build up losses to increase the amount of bad play on film Completely disingenuous and you know it. Installing a new system (and ethic) takes time. Hell even figuring out which guys will work in the system and in what roles takes time. Blowing out Earlham by 70 doesn’t help the staff figure that out, but a tough road game against a (apparently) pretty good opponent does, win or lose. Lewis’ success will come down to his first 2-3 recruiting classes and his ability to get guys to buy in to the system. I’m not gonna freak out about a game 2 road loss. Check in January, maybe I’ll be freaking out by then. But realistically, did anyone think we were going undefeated this year? Or is this just some anti IU nonsense already?

Toughness. That's the X factor in the equation that Lewis has been trying to fix since he got here. He inherited a roster filled with guys who were recruited and coached by Mr. Roger's and he's Oscar the Grouch.
The other X factor is the maddening split personality of Coleman. Kid said without Coleman we lose by 20. I'm not so sure because 8 turnovers means he's still playing out of control and recklessly. We aren't good enough to recover from that. That has always been his handle..great talent and a mental midget who doesn't take care of the ball. We have no choice but to play him 35+ minutes a game but Lewis has to figure out how to manage his recklessness.
I think Demarius is highly undervalued and will have a really solid year. I like him a ton. He's productive, athletic and doesn't act like an idiot.
Last thought...I loved Lewis's post game comments. He's honest and doesn't sugarcoat our issues. Also doesn't call out any individual but keeps it general to the team even though it isn't hard to figure out who he's talking about.
Give him a class or two to get some players who have the kind of toughness he demands. This year will be a 14-16 win year.

Hate to lose but think it could work in our favor giving the stafff a laundry list of things to fix. You know who must have been an incredibly strong team last year? IUPUI. They had quite the laundry list of things to fix from 26 losses. If they had been in the tourney, they would have been a 1 seed. I just feel like we have a coach now who will get things done and have accountability. Bench time for guys who don't respond. Haven'e seen any of these guys play, so maybe the just are not good enough. If that's the case we will see how he plays with what he has. Since he is new at this, hopefully he's learning as well. Just think things will be sporadic early on and hopefully improve.

I think the team was still hung-over a bit from the 70 point beat-down from earlier in the week, or at least in the first half with the very slow start when we could not get anything together. Team turned it around second half, we put up 40 points but too little too late. We probably won't win many games this year with 19 turnovers. Learn and move on.

I loved the “we get all in our feelings” comment. (Coleman a big part of that)

I think it's completely wrong to suggest that if Lewis can't motivate this group, he will motivate some group three years in the future because they will have "toughness". I think kids are pretty much kids, and you either know how to motivate them or you don't. The overall toughness of the group might be marginally higher but won't be fundamentally different. This line of thought is just laying the groundwork for three years of excuses and makes me want to puke. Who exactly on this squad is weak and can't be motivated? Sparks? Sellers? Bumbalough? Jacobs? these are the holdovers that played significant minutes. Maybe Lewis should not have let them come back?
Recruiters recruit and successful coaches succeed. Successful coaches characteristically succeed surprising well in their first year, relative to the hand they are dealt. Lewis was dealt a much better hand than the average first year MAC coach gets.
One real game does not, of course, determine the quality of Lewis as a coach, but it does illustrate what our fanbase has become.

We should know this year what we have as far as the coach. No need to wait 3 years. The indicators and trends should be obvious in year 1.
Majerus went .500 his first year and I remember him saying that was his best coaching given our level of talent on hand. I recall as a student that the overall record was meh but the quality of play was better than under Brown.
We’ll know by the end of this season what we have...

It is up to the coach to motivate, but you can recruit toughness. Persons comes to mind. His toughness had nothing to do with his coach.

I was optimistic about defensive intensity after Earlham where they did not have to bring that much effort to win handily. I am a bit pessimistic on that count after this game where we did not have that intensity. Especially maybe Sparks and Windham.
Coleman, Sparks defense may be excused a bit, both were needed on offense played too many minutes I think, and Sellers was not full speed, but all except maybe Pearson were disappointing on the defensive end. We will do better.
Like somebody said, I was a little surprised we did not see Cleary. Not that he is a defensive stopper, but he might have provided rest if that was needed by Coleman, Windham. Owens White is a small guard so I'm not sure he would have helped, but he hustles and is quick he can certainly step in for Bumb if needed.

With the transfer portal as it is, Lewis recruited everyone who’s on the team. He could have picked up a whole new squad but he kept just about everyone and even re-recruited the players who briefly entered the portal.

We’re two games in. Let’s see how we are in January after Lewis has had a team at full health or nearly full health and a month of games in the new system under their belt.
As far as Cleary, maybe he just didn’t earn court time in practice this week, or maybe he’s a little dinged up.

Portal recruiting doesn't start at the last minute.

I am not going to jump off of the cliff after one game. The body of work for the entire season will give us an indication on where the ship is sailing. I also want to see a full recruiting cycle before I start judging. The only guy that I can remember that kicked ass his first year was Hunsaker. Ray was 16-12 but had to deal with the NCAA crap though he had a stud in Steve Payne, etc. Majerus was 500 with shit talent his first year. I am not convinced that our roster is loaded with the right pieces. Sparks is good but has some holes, Coleman is a massive head-case and we do not have a pure shooter on the roster. We have a a lot of pieces that don’t belong in this puzzle.
