Paddock got a whole lot of love from the BIG10 TV crew both local and back in Chicago. Ball State got a few mentions along the way too.

Perhaps we should be more sympathetic to Mike Neu in his idea Paddock could be the guy to get us wins last year?
But not more sympathetic that he couldn't get more out of him?

So we had a guy who got in a big 10 game led a game winning drive. A running back who starts at a pac/12 school and Db playing for the chiefs but before that. We had multiple nfl practice squad players who are still playing some version of pro football. A running back who was playing for Falcons and an oline guy for the colts. oh I forgot about the all american tight ends we had last year... Quite a bit of talent the last handful of years. Seems like our record should be a better than it was.

Seems like our record should be a better than it was. We know the whole idea of running it back did not work.
We know the very good season we had was product of the ball bouncing in our direction quite a few times.
The talent we have had does support some of the good results we have had, I am not so sure in FB that having enough potential star players at the MAC level overcomes the need there is for a much stronger supporting cast and much better coaching.
The latter shortcoming we can say is on the shoulders of a HC, but it is also the product of resources for staff, and quite a lot on the choice of a HC without college experience and connections sufficient to attract staff. He had to convince a staff he would be a great success and move up. There was NO reason to expect much such quick success when he was hired.
I keep asking why would we have expected Neu to be able to attract a good staff, and wouldn't we have expected to get about what we ended up with. A few good, but mostly mediocre, on their own way independent of his success or failure and a few loyal connections independent of their quality?

Seems like our record should be a better than it was. We also HAVE ... a QB who was top 12 in the nation in passing yardage and 5th nationally in TDs coming into this year. His success here was such that he was benched. As a team we've throw for abut 1,300 yards ... a WR from Pac-12 Colorado ... a RB who rushed for more than 1,300 yards last year in the MAC. Also worth noting is that while we did have those players your mention on our team, we are probably in the lower half of the MAC in terms of producing professional level talent. It's not just that the coaches do little with what they have; it's that they've only been able to recruit mid-level MAC talent to begin with. That's not likely to get better with NIL. |
