Would love to see us land 6'8", 270 lb. Sydney Curry of Louisville. Might only have one year left unless there's he's got an extra Covid year available. He played at Ft. Wayne Northrup in H.S. so maybe he'd like to get closer to home. He had a disappointing year this past year under first year coach Kenny Payne. Had a very good 21-22 season. Bring him and Kamari Lands also. I think Kamari is from Indy? From one Cardinal team to another?

He played a fair amount as a frosh and was impressive in spurts. It was a difficult season as Payne pretty much lost the locker room by early December.

Just my opinion, but I think we have two solid big bodies in Sparks and Bashir. One more wouldn't hurt but we need experienced, athletic guards and wings. Jones is coming in as a freshman but he is a rail. We need some road-tested transfers who can contribute and compete with Kent, Akron, OU, Buff & Toledo from day 1.
I confess of having no idea whether our two frosh, Micah Bell or Quincy Adams, is capable of contributing next year or not but as a coach you cannot afford to let guys slowly develop and hope they will turn into something in a couple years. They have to be high IQ, Day 1 ready to compete and contribute in your system.

Another good big always good. Jones is not painfully skinny and may fill out nicely, but I agree it may not be the biggest need, and do like getting a good athletic wing defender. Somebody quicker but Pearson's size to give the option of playing a defensive stopper when needed.
It's very highest priority to get an experienced guard and some outside shooting. Losing Coleman and DJ is biggest problem.
Those returning freshmen are athletes, one a clever passer, but neither a deadeye shooter.
A really quick player has to be a consideration, too.

The reality is that we need to upgrade EVERY position.

The reality is that we need to upgrade EVERY position. Improve, yes. Acquire depth, yes. But upgrade maybe too strong a word. Talent is there. Sparks, Sellers and Pearson are pretty good, with improvement quite possible. Even likely for Sellers I think.

One thing I've noticed is that transfers don't seem to be blessed nearly as much as HS kids.

No, we don't want any really quick players.

Portal questions If a player enters portal and no one offers, what is the obligation for the current school to retain them? What, if any, communication takes place between the interested schools and the incumbent school coaching staffs?

A coach doesn't have to renew a players scholarship even if they don't enter the portal.

The transfer portal is WAY out of control. I just noticed that North Carolina, last year's NCAA runner-up now have SIX players in the portal. I really don't care for their team but there is no loyalty anymore even for the blue-blood programs.
I am hoping we see two new rules next year:
1. Players can go straight from NBA from high school if they are good enough 2. Transfer portal reverts back to standard rule prior to covid (i.e. transfer must sit out one year unless due to coaching change).
Doubt it happens but at some point there will be 25 top mega-teams in the country then everyone else.

Interesting. Charles Barkley was interviewed on 60 Minutes Sunday and talked about how disgusting NCAA basketball has become with the portal. He also mentioned that it would come down to only 25 schools with the money to compete for basketball championships.

There are 358 D1 men's teams. Each team with maybe 15 players. That means that of 5370 players, 21% of them are transferring.
This can't continue.
