I think it's worth noting that most players who achieved All-MAC status last year are not returning to the same team this year. Only 4 of the 20 (first-, second- and third-team and honorable mention) will return to the same school and only one on the first or second teams (Freeman at Akron) will return. It is the new norm. MAC team stars will move on...dominant players are one and done for sure.
Maybe the key to building a team is to have 4th team players? Get lucky and have a star for a year and hope for two. Knowing they are gone after one year.

I think it's also worth noting Akron got Ali Ali back after a 1 year stay at Butler. Freeman combined with Ali will give Akron a dominate front court and potentially the best 2 players in the conference next season.

And kids like Coleman and Ali have been able to do that because of the transfer-every-year-without-repercussion rules. Now that that's coming to an end, things should settle down some. Neither of those would make that move with the rules in place next year, I believe.
I'd still advocate focusing the vast majority of recruiting on the portal going forward. Recruit a few high school kids if you want, but get kids whose first transfer is to Ball State, meaning if they want to transfer again there'll likely be a bit of a penalty involved.

The lesson I take is things can change quickly. I remember the summer before Whitford’s last year the team disintegrated and I thought we’d be a program in shambles all year but Whitford somehow put together the solid core that Lewis inherited. So while I’m extremely disappointed in the current state of the program, I am hopeful it can turnaround as quick as it fell apart.

Ill add Lewis took this job at the worst possible time ever. Its not just him struggling. Read the the thousands of articles you can find from 10 minutes on twitter. Coaches at all levels are at a loss of what tgey can do or not do. Your basically playing the portal lottery can your pick ups hit it big. If not your screwed just buy more quick pics next year "We can't expect our poor BSU coach to contend this year because of [insert description of disadvantage all MAC coaches face]"

So then it seem likely that it will be Groce who is the MAC coach that best deals with MAC disadvantages and kicks our ass this year. It's always somebody. And has been for, what, 23 years now?

After the covid exemp and with the added rules its going to be easier this year is the last of no rules, We hope. Alot of coaches and teams will struggle

Actually, I think both are allowed the transfer as grad transfers and all grad transfers don't have to sit. (That's why Coleman had to wait so long)
If an underclassman transfers he is now limited to one transfer until he graduates, otherwise he has to sit a year. And of course that means schools aren't as interested in him when they have to wait for him to play.
A mid major like BSU would possibly, maybe, take such a transfer to get the talent.
I am not sure BSU and Lewis didn't know Coleman was up in the air and probably going to leave, but this is the mess we are in having to recruit our own players. Lewis got it done last year. Not in this case.
I don't think he had much chance with any of our 3 big losses in the portal, Sparks, Sellers and Coleman. Losing a guy to graduation is normal and losing Bumb was as much due to his really needing a reset and his lack of fit and a roster with so many guards.

After the covid exemp and with the added rules its going to be easier this year is the last of no rules, We hope. Alot of coaches and teams will struggle It already is just slightly tighter but the rules will mean the transfers should be a little more cautious leaving after one or two years. It's going to be a bigger commitment than the original signing... You get a good transfer you may have 2 years! With production right away!
If we do get a transfer, I think we'll see them willing to leave as a grad transfer any way, assuming they can amass the credit hours. Definitely easier to keep a transfer. But that NIL money is out there we can't match.
That makes mills idea of recruiting in the portal a good idea, just not foolproof.
To me, going after the grad transfers and the second tier of recruits who can be solid starters (including JUCO and transfers) may have less upside but is even more necessary than the past. It just isn't tenable to have to completely rebuild every year, you have to have a core of players.
If you can lock in 3-5 rotation players, get some good HS talent that you can develop to that level, and then roll the dice every year on getting a few new higher talent players. You are probably replacing players who just left, and you may have only one year of high production out of the best you ever get, but then you may be able to stay competitive every year and have a chance for championship when you get lucky.

Coleman will no doubt get some money at Nebraska but that team will not get him in the NCAA tourney. He is counted on as a starter. Sparks will be on a team that should play in the tourney question is will he be seeing much playing time. I think the liklihood of him transferring again after 1 yr at IU is very high. Sellers is going to be playing on a team full of transfers. The amount of playing time may not be as much as he thinks. That team has 4 5th yr players & a redshirt sr. I am sure he will get some money but playing time? NCAA team probably not happening at UCF.

I don't think the NCAA was the issue. He's a lot further from home than Muncie, if he wanted to delay relocating overseas, maybe hopes for a big year in better competition that gets him a long shot in the NBA. He probably needs/wants the money now. Even though this won't pay as much as a good Euro contract it may be substantial.
Sellers should do fine, but he is closer to home in Ga. and back in warm weather.
Sparks is the one most hurt by the difficulty in another transfer. I don't see that good a fit at IU for him, and he's being recruited over already.

In addition to sitting out a year (as he wouldn't be a grad transfer), he would have to admit (at least to himself) that leaving BSU wasn't such a good idea. My guess is he would prefer to be practice competition and a good teammate instead of transferring out of IU. As he mentioned in one of his post-BSU interviews, he always dreamed as a kid growing up wearing those candy striped pants IU has. You get to leave those pants on longer if you are sitting on the bench not playing.

If he doesn't get much PT this year and IU signs another center, he could be killing his pro chances if he doesn't transfer.
Sitting a year he might need to change his game. As it is he isn't a Euro big man at this point, or an NBA candidate either.
Maybe IU is a place he can learn and change. But he'll need to show that improved game.
