So, I live in Northern Indiana and subscribe on-line to the Star Press. They do little to know reporting on the basketball team. Does the printed copy cover or has the paper gotten so short of staff that they cannot cover the basketball games? If nothing else have the Ball State Daily News provide the story, but print stories about the basketball team? What’s the issue?

I was just going to ask the same question. Nothing from the last two games. Nothing about today’s game. There’s zero community engagement because the local paper acts like IU is the local team.

It is disappointing. There is email for the reporters on the SP website. There are two sports reporters listed. Not exactly sure what is whose responsibility. No email for an editor or manager.
Gus Martin no doubt has a heavy load. HS sports pretty busy in November. I doubt it is his decision where to give priority.
I suppose we could email questions about any editorial policy or priority to Gus and tell him to forward to his boss...
The local news coverage is sparse and although the print paper subscription is not that expensive, it very very rarely has anything in it not appearing on the website. Often the articles are reprints from other Indiana papers, or USA Today.
A digital subscription gets access to other Gannet Press sources as well as Muncie. The print newspaper obviously dying. I have no idea if many people get home delivery.
I do like drinking morning coffee and reading the Comics and doing the puzzles...the digital interface isn't that good for those uses, and I have not mastered how you navigate it to print out those features.

It is sad when you have only the choice to read the sophomoric scribbling in the DN to get a report, or the computer generated ESPN recap.
Last year we could get the coach and players press conference on line, but it doesn't look like they are doing that for all games either.

Lewis has had Press Conferences on the BSU athletic site but not recently. The daily News accounts that I have read have been good. Researched well with detailed interviews. Martin is good but DN is also. Star Press Eedition is always a day late and a dollar short with their account of games thus old news. The BSU site has same day game results and stats.

Agreed with the DN coverage. The Muncie Star Press is a dying paper. No Saturday paper, no holiday paper and very few articles concerning the community. Gannet owned says all you need to know about it. Sad.

Don't just blame Gannett for The Star Press' demise. We're all responsible for that, too. All we've done for 3-4 decades is bitch about our local newspapers, and we stopped supporting them long ago. Didn't cover a BSU game or have a story about some university event, so I'm going to stop taking it. Didn't cover my son's high school football game or my daughter's dance recital, so it's not getting my dollar. Didn't like the coverage of local government or that latest editorial, so I'm dropping my subscription.
No doubt, our local newspapers were far from perfect, and the companies that own them have done their fair share to contribute to their demise.
But, face it, local newspapers were a steal. Even when they were mediocre, they delivered local, state, nation and international news; sports news and results; health, home and general lifestyle news, obituaries and public records to our doorsteps. And we said, no thanks, I'd rather visit 20-30 different websites instead. And, instead of that biased shit the newspapers gave me, I'm going to settle for the REALLY biased PR shit that outlets like BSU athletics puts out.
So, I'm not sure too many folks on here have much of a right to bitch about local newspaper coverage of anything, BSU sports included.

Instead of an editor screening the news you now get social media likes. And your news feed becomes what you WANT to be true rather than some uncomfortable choice you'd rather just ignore. True or not. Mills has a point too about the ease of searching out information.
Not completely new that media comes with editorial limits and bias. I grew up with a Pulliam press bias in newspapers and too often news stories involving government especially were influenced by political bias. Nothing new now about that. But editors and writers covered and reported community events just as Mills says, much of it was just local facts you would miss if you relied on just your friends interest and experiences.
And you didn't have to listen to everybody's opinion you got just the story and facts.
We here like to share opinion and we come to read knowing it's strengths and weaknesses with a relatively small number of posters, limited in scope to mostly shared interest and easy to navigate. And mostly wanting to hear the opinions and sources of fact that we can mostly trust.
Gus Martin seems a good reporter, if he can post on X his story should be on the SP site. I can support what local news coverage there is. Rob's suggestion to avoid an annoying paywall I understand. But we end up seeing Elon's ads, (or Rob's), so there is no free lunch.

In fact we're rarely surprised by the news. And our analysis is free to look at more angles and bring together other things not in that presser.
I still think there's reason to keep him employed and support the local press.

Social media will be the downfall of modern society.
It's already had an incredibly negative effect on our mental health as a whole. Especially young people.
