Cards now down by eight, I actually think it is possible Lewis will decide this job is hopeless and will leave and take an assistant job else where. Without some major cash, it will be very difficult to field a winning team next season. Thanks to the NIL and the portal allowing transfer without sitting out. Hopefully the Cards can make a comeback tonight. Go Cards! RF I have had the same thought that Lewis give it one more year and if it keeps going like it has he’ll move back to a P5 assistant job and basically start over.

Boy I don’t know. He’s not a quitter at anything and even though he has publicly stated his frustration with the transfer portal I can’t see him throwing in the towel. I think he’s going to do better than average in the portal and it has to start this spring.

Agree RC and..... Just an opinion, but if/when Lewis leaves, we will probably get a pretty good summary of the state of BSU basketball....

I see this path as the most likely one. Recruiting is the foundation, and so far he's clearly failed at that. Is he prideful, yes, but so was Lembo. When you realize you don't recruit at an elite level and there's zero support or commitment from the administration, walking away seems like the only option to save your career. I think about it - the MAC is truly abysmal this year and the best he can muster is maybe 8th or 9th place?

Portal roulette will put a lot of coaches in the position Lewis is in this year.
Good MAC teams one year with returning eligible players no longer is much of an advantage. Bigger NIL purses will be...it is true.
We were poised for a very good year without the existence of the portal.
He, as will be true for others, will have to adjust to that, and I very much doubt he hangs it up.
BSU isn't likely to be a great coaching job, a few MAC jobs likely to be better heeled slightly in the NIL funding, but it's hardly the worst either.

Well, despite all the negativity from the Nervous Nellies, Debbie Downers and human Quaaludes around here, our grip on 9th place remains firm and the all important 8th place spot is STILL likely to come down to the clash of titans BSU-WMU tilt on 3/2.
Shocking that our fickle fanbase has no confidence in the team's ability to end the season by losing in the first round of the MAC tourney when our program has been so reliable in that regard. I heard that Lewis brought in some ex players to talk to the team about our long and storied tradition of losing in the first round of the MAC tourney to inspire them to live up to the program's standards.

It's not administration that produced portal losses, and it's premature to judge recruiting in this year's situation. Let's see how he adjusts after a gut shot. He's a tough competitor. It's not much fun watching this season, but rebuilding rarely is.

How many of you realize that the team we beat last night NIU only had 6 scholarship athletes available for the game. Their bench was as weak as ours. The next game EMU last night only played 7 scholarship athletes too. The one thing that each of the currently 9th thru 12th place teams have is no depth at this time.

While I totally agree about Lewis, I also think there is an eff this sheiss element to bulldogs and they cannot tolerate organizational ineptitude and if they can’t change it they move on to what they consider a better situation.

The NIU commentator suggested that we might be picked to win the MAC in next year’s preseason. So it’s probably time to extend Lewis. Strike while the iron is hot. I just threw up in my mouth Get used to that taste.

It's not much fun watching this season, but rebuilding rarely is. Particularly when your "rebuilding" results in less talent than you were given initially. The cold hard truth may be that "rebuild" is just not the same animal it always has been. More a case of roulette.
But we really lost big in last years spin of the wheel. The talent lost were upper class players. Lewis had recruited freshmen expecting to have some time to work with them before he lost those veteran players. And after all, Doughty, Watts injury was not in the plan...
He did not do badly in the current crop of newcomers as some say, but did not get home runs either. That would have been required to immediately replace Sparks, Sellers.
Whether we judge him harshly or not on the two freshmen recruited last year late in the cycle, he had retained a good group. Bell, seems much like the miss with Cleary who just did not come around. Brown a project worth taking a swing on may be similar this year, but I doubt Lewis expected much this year, so that remains an open question.
His success obviously depends on good results this year, and probably on seeing one or more of the players on this years roster making a significant improvement. The portal each year is a new spin of the wheel and continuity is having good players two years... The work done this year with Anderson and others who return may pay off, talent level will improve, but putting together a new team every year is going to be every coaches nightmare every year with the portal playing such a big role.
