The more I think about Wentz, the more intrigued I am. The idea of picking up a 28 year old qb with elite NFL production on his resume is almost too good to be true. Maybe it IS too good to be true. Everything turns on your theory of why his production dropped to the point of being benched in favor of Jalen Hurts. There is one thing that NFL front offices hate, hate, hate above all other things, and that is admitting to a mistake. Benching the qb you paid a shit ton of money to is admitting a mistake in a BIG way.
As I said, everything turns on the factor(s) you blame for his drop off in production. And, if you think the factor(s) is(are) reversible. Since I have no idea whatsoever what was behind his decline, I am agnostic on acquiring him. I think he MIGHT be a godsend, but I don't really know. Despite how terrible he was in 2020, he is still the best possibility I know of for the colts to pick up an elite qb. that's not necessarily saying a whole lot, though, because the other possibilities I know of are few and remote.

The intriguing thing is that with the Colts he's unlikely to be as bad as 2020. Better line, better run game. A fresh start with a coach he trusts. That coach and system pretty good at finding what he can do, hiding his weakness.
The worst case may be a below average QB, not enough to win a Super Bowl. But as you say, they may not have a better choice, almost certain he's a better bet than a rookie drafted where the would draft.
The contract is not so bad, 2 years they pay a little above average, then cut him if he hasn't panned out.

Wentz is a Colt for a 3rd this year and a conditional 2nd next year.

That's not a bad deal for the Colts. The Eagles... woof.

Well interesting. As I said, it all depends on what you think went wrong with him last year and can it be fixed. Because he was terrible last year, and I mean terrible himself.... regardless of anything to do with his surroundings.
Seems to me like probably the best of all the more or less desperate options available to the colts...but then again I have no idea what went wrong with Wentz last year.

People are screaming that the colts over paid. Really? A 3rd and a possible first is not overpaying, especially for a guy who, if Reich can “fix” him, is pretty dang good. I know that’s a big if but it can be done. Plugging wentz in vs an unproven rookie is a good situation and paired with their running game should compete immediately. But, they gotta get a left tackle.

FYI - the Eagles had more rushing yards and better yards per carry than the colts in 2020.

Colts run game did struggle this past season but once Taylor figured things out it got better. It didn’t help that Reich abandoned it too quickly too often. Losing Mack hurt. I anticipate the Colts being better with the run game next year.

Wentz does have some really cool outfits. Hope to see him wearing these around Indy.

The narrative that keeps getting repeated is that the colts offense is a great spot for a qb.
I think people are just repeating this without thinking too much about it. Consider:
1) The colts running game seems to be significantly overrated. It's actually very mediocre and much worse than the Eagles'.
2) There is a giant gaping hole at the most important position in the O-line...there is literally nobody there. Also the right guard led the league in holding. On what grounds do people say the colts have an elite offensive line? Seems like people have bought uncritically into unsupported hype from the organization.
3) Is there a worse receiving corp in the league? Maybe, but who? The colt's "#1 WR" was 46th in the league in yardage, is old, visibly declining, recently injury prone, and a free agent, and it goes downhill from there. Such are the results you should expect when you repeatedly spend your top draft capital on low-value positions.
Seems to me that improvement of Wentz will be on Wentz and the coaching staff, because the help provided by the colts offense is being hugely overrated.

I certainly think some folks are a little overboard with the whole idea of the Colts being some type of offensive powerhouse, but I'm a little more optimistic than the general.
First off, I would say the rushing game improved significantly as the season progressed, specifically Jonathan Taylor improved as the season progressed. He was a much different RB in the last 7-8 games. Early in the year he would repeatedly miss the hole or run into his own blockers. Later in the year, he displayed much better vision, did a better job hitting the hole and it showed in his stats. I think the future of the running game is quite promising with him as the lead back. Even with him struggling though much of the early season, the Colts rushing offense ranked 11th in the league, so yes worse than the Eagles, but better than 20 or so other teams.
There is a hole to fill on the line, but by all accounts it is a fairly deep draft for tackles. A shrewd selection with either their first or second pick could land them a starter from what I've heard analysts say. Whether the line is "elite" or not might be debatable, but I think there's little doubt it's better than the Eagles in terms of pass protection. Does the 21 sacks the Colts gave up seem better than the 65 the Eagles allowed? I'd say compared to the Eagles that's "elite" pass protection. And let's not forget the Colts have a BSU grad waiting in the wings to be unleashed on the NFL.
I certainly don't see much to cheer about with the receiving corps. Hilton is basically toast. On the other hand, the Colts passing game also was 11th in the league last year, so there had to be a few receiving groups that were worse. I guess if it's not a No. 1 pick it must not be considered "top draft capital" because the Colts have spent 2nd-round picks for the past two years on receivers. I'd say both of those hold promise for improved play, but certainly Campbell's injury history is troubling. But the reality is the Colts could have picked up DK Metcalf or Diontae Johnson with that "low draft capital" second-round pick the same year they picked Campbell so it's pretty clear good top-flight receivers don't have to be No. 1 picks. You just have to make the right pick.
I think this whole idea of Reich as a "quarterback whisperer" is kinda silly. If he actually had some magical mystical mojo that he could transfer to anybody, the Colts just would have moved forward with Brissett and Eason. But I do think there's something to the fact that he had some history with Rivers, has some history with Wentz and there's the possibility that he can fix some of their issues. Rivers at least cut his interceptions down from the previous year although his stats were not otherwise significantly different that his last year in San Diego. It's hard to imagine Wentz could be worse than last year. It might not be a great offensive environment, but I'd say likely much better than the Eagles. Apparently if Reich and Wentz can just talk to each other, it'll be better than the environment he had with the Eagles.

I'm a big fan of the Odeyingbo pick. Having four arms strikes me a being a huge advantage in football.

If he actually had some magical mystical mojo that he could transfer to anybody, the Colts just would have moved forward with Brissett and Eason. But I do think there's something to the fact that he had some history with Rivers... Brisset had his chance, proved he was a top notch back up. Reich did a very good job with game plan and plays before Brisset was injured.
Not exactly magical coaching I agree, but probably a job well above the norm. Eason reportedly has arm talent, but there was understandable uncertainty and doubt the Colts were going to the top of the heap playing him.
Wentz has arm and winning experience with Reich's offense and he is very likely to be better than that combination, worst case.
If Wentz returns to his top form Reich will get credit, some deserved, probably too much. Given how different the two QBs are Reich can't just trot out last years offense, he and the OC will deserve credit if it goes well.
Good point on Rivers who did about as well as anyone expected. Again some credit has to go to the coach and creating the best possible fit.
