Ok, just got back from W.Lafayette. Here comes the broken record but I am absolutely correct about this; Whitford has really killed us by not recruiting a couple of big bodied competent players. The difference in this game was Harms had to be accounted for which allowed Purdue to run their motion. Watching this live I can tell you Painter can flat out coach. They run a legitiment motion and they set real screens and Harms opens up the floor.Taylor was dogged tired in the second half all because of token pressure for 90 feet the entire game. We are terribly soft inside. Teague, not once got in Harms left shoulder to make him shoot either with a right handed hook, which he can’t or take a jump shot. Defensively, we really are bad and rebounding, my god we were not even checking guys off the glass. We have guys turning their heads when the ball goes in the air and Purdue was able to get around and get to the offensive Board. Officiating was not good but we killed ourselves by our turnovers and lack of low post scoring. We cannot play the big boys for the one millionth time playing this way without a true postnscorer and Trey is not the answer against quality opponents. We are going to win some games in the MAC but it is still glaring to me and the Purdue people I sat next too that our kryptonite is our lack of inside play. I like this team but for the glaring hole that has still not been fixed!

Gregg Doyle mentions another difference in his column about the game. He said Purdue players were diving for loose balls while our guys were bending over for them. We gotta be scrappier than that.

I love the way some of our guys compete! The big stage did not bother us at all which is encouraging. I thought they all played as if they belonged on the same floor as Purdue which was great to see. Our physical strength is a big problem inside. Hazen, Teague and Mallers were playing hard but physically they were easily pushed around inside. I really don’t understand this coaching staffs philosophy about strength. You can still have some bulk and not lose your quickness. Good Lord, Purdue’s kids though not huge had so much more definition and Edwards is really fun to watch away from the ball. The kid moves so well and is lightinging getting to the paint and has a quick trigger. Not an NBA player most likely because of his size, he looks more like a 5’10 or 5”11 not 6’1 as he is listed. Purdue has a couple of really good athletes and lots of role players. Cline, the kid from Ft.Wayne, the transfer are nice role players has they move without the basketball and they can shoot and they play smart. None of those guys are real athletic but they do play within themselves and are active. Just don’t understand Whits lack of vision for some physical specimens.

Gregg Doyle mentions another difference in his column about the game. He said Purdue players were diving for loose balls while our guys were bending over for them. We gotta be scrappier than that. They play like our late 80’s and early 90’s teams with grit and toughness. You can see why Painter recruited Taylor. Walton has some toughness and Hazen does as well but he needs to get stronger. I was terribly disappointed in Teague’s play tonight. Haas got into his head and took him out of the game. You have to take the ball right at Haas and you can’t worry about getting your shot blocked. The problem with our offense is that our spacing was so poor and when we tried to create, Teague never had the space to do anything. Once the ball gets in the hands of Walton, Person or Teague, we stop moving away from the ball which makes it so easy to help. Purdue is constantly moving. There movement created issues for us on help side helping their guys get lose which turned into a huge advantage for Purdue on the glass. Good offense that is disciplined makes average players pretty good when you are always moving. If there is a replay of this game, just watch Purdue when they have the ball and compare that to us. They create space with movement away from the ball and with spacing and we tend to watch when we try to create and go to the cup.!

Sad, as I had always rooted for Purdue, except when we played them.

Don't forget we shot very well on 3pfga and their POY did not shoot well on his 3's. That leveled the game. We can improve on this game, and having Trey get back to par will also help. Whatever you say about Whit, he had the team ready, got pretty good effort. Not a lot to be really upset about all things considered. Better team won, we hit shots at end to narrow the margin. Good for our power rating. Good experience for some players in a tough gym. Now have to get ready for tough tournament experience. Never easy to be up several games in a row, all but maybe one, we're likely underdogs. We dont always agree but I agree with this assessment.

Eastern is that dude we don’t have and need. Big strong and versatile. Buffalo has those types. He was a problem on the boards . Rebounding was a big difference.

But turnovers have to be in our favor when we are at a size disadvantage. Instead 2-1 their way. Rebound margin way out of line too. Your post above painted an accurate picture of how PU beat us to the ball on more than a few crucial rebounds.
Rebound margin is sometimes tricky to evaluate, but you have to get the ball off your own board when you are smaller. Give up some because you are challenging a shot or getting caught helping, I get that. But have to do better than we did. And we should get more off the offensive board, if we keep moving. Cannot be both smaller and less active, and absolutely have to block out.
Bottom line is PU was not only physically bigger down the line, but they played smarter man for man. Great point above about our guys standing and watching too often. Great point about not attacking the bigger stronger defenders.
The good news is that we can improve on those things. And as several people have mentioned if we can get our good athletes KJ, Taj, Hazen to play not only hard but smart, we can be awfully tough.

Good points here about PU and how their guys use their size effectively.
Right now I was glad to see Teague play pretty hard, he has sometimes just disappeared. But he needs to be smarter and go right at the bigger guys, get fouled and get to the line as often as he gets his shot bothered or blocked, then he's ahead of the game. It's no fun to challenge somebody and lose the match up, but much worse to play passively and go away from the trouble. If he doesn't attack and do it smart he is caught going away from the basket too much, never gets a rebound when he misses, and never gets fouled, and those fall away shots are not that much more accurate necessarily than the shot when he goes at the guy and is too close to him for the defender to always use his length. I see the logic of going with the swifter thinner more skilled big guys. True, those bigger stronger guys don't try, don't have to try to dance around as much, they match muscle. No real choice often to use dance moves. The skinny guys have to do some of that, too, really make smart choices when to dance away and use another angle, when to go right into the big guy, take some lumps but also really annoy them when you get through, or get fouled. If they have to worry about fouls, or they get into real foul trouble, you can have your way with them.
I also agree with you about their physical development and like the way PU gets their guys well defined and stronger even when they aren't bruisers. Great program, good coaching, Painter is a first class coach.
