Even my wife made comments about some of the fouls or lack there of. That never happens. We probably wouldn’t have won but a fair fight would have made it more interesting. Liked the effort last night.

Even my wife made comments about some of the fouls or lack there of. That never happens. We probably wouldn’t have won but a fair fight would have made it more interesting. Liked the effort last night. Maybe a couple of the fouls on Teague fall in that category. KJ deserved to get called on his share. Teague sometimes got caught not being active enough, sometimes chose to challenge a play he shouldn't. He can improve on inside defense and he better do so if we are going to be really good.
I remember some games from those great BSU teams where we were very good inside, and when a real star inside went out we somehow found that guy who stepped in their place hold the fort. Teague is that guy this year with Trey doing the heavy lifting when he is back to full speed.
Teague can improve, needs to to do better, especially if he is going to segue into being our small ball star player next year. Kent had a player two years ago with not much more size than Teague who was the MAC's best player a lot of the time, usually outplayed or matched the bigger players he was up against every game. Did not have Teague's abilities outside the paint. But. Played so smart in the lane, offense and defense.

Reevo made a great point about spacing. We often run a pretty poor half court offense. Against the lesser teams it doesn’t matter that much as we have the talent to score anyway. But against the better and bigger teams we just get in a big clump, nobody moves, we wait for one guy to make a play, and we’re easy to guard and it becomes very difficult for us to get buckets.
Against ISU we were at our best when we were up tempo and not getting bogged down in running sets. But not every team is going to allow us to get out and run and not every team is going to allow us to get boards. What we saw in the second half last night is what we need to really work on if we hope to be any better than we have been. The top Mac teams are not going to let us get out and go and they are going to out rebound us. We’ve GOT to be better in half court. And we’ve got to dive for loose balls and beat opponents to spots etc. Majerus and Hunsacker preached the value of the ball, of each possession and those teams fought for every inch of the floor. It was OUR floor. We are talented, but we are not yet smart and scrappy. We play hard but you have to also be smart and also willing to throw your body around when necessary.
Purdue was a very good lesson in how to play and I think our guys saw that. I know whit knows it.

Is Huggins going to play? He is a red shirt freshman and played 42 seconds , 9 seconds, and 0 seconds in our first three games. I do not understand why players are recruited and given scholarships if they cannot play. We definitely could have used another inside player against Purdue; but Huggins did not play. Is he going in the same direction as Fields?

He is big and strong but yea at this point he is wasted scholarship

He is big and strong but yea at this point he is wasted scholarship Not at all unusual for a big recruit to not see court much. He was a kid everybody knew needed one year to be where you wanted him as a freshman. A year behind the curve. The unknown maybe is whether he is on the curve, progressing. If you assume he is a typical freshman THIS year in first year, it is not unusual to see him play in a big game like PU. A few fouls in a few minutes is not really what we needed.
I might have expected a few mop up minutes against ISU. I'd expect him to play some in the 3 games, 3 days format coming up but not much depending on how much time we play Trey. Just because that is a pretty tough schedule, a few minutes breather or longer in a game decided might be just the ticket.
At this point in the season Whit has to establish his rotation and in any close game it is not the time we should use many minutes to develop a player who is likely to play 10 minutes in a game at most any game.
If he is progressing normally, I'd expect to see him a little more late in the conference season, but still mostly in mop up time. Unless he really comes on...then he might get into the rotation. But even if better, he is fighting for PT with a number of players.

He is fighting for PT but he should not be. He is because we are still being forced to play kids out of position because we have not recruited or missed on bigs. You cant tell me Mallers should be banging around down in the post. I love him but he is getting murdered down there. We need Teague down there but he does not want to be down there. We want him down there but is being a true post really his game? That leaves us with Trey who is still not overly agressive but is really our only true post option.

If defense is the only issue your argument is better. But playing Huggins means he has to play the other end.
He is limited there to low post and that is not our game considering the other 4 players.
This early I just don't expect much from any first year big man.

Im not saying throw him out there for extended minutes. Im saying we desperately needed help yesterday we were foul trouble and he could have bought us a few minutes. I do not expect him to really do anything. Also he has been practicing for a year its not like he just arrived on campus.

Reevo we need Trey to get healthy quickly because you are absolutely right that Teague must play the 4!
So far, Walton impressed me that he can always get to the rim and I think he’s a good defender.
I guess I was expecting more from Hazen than I’ve seen in the first few games. He does seem to have a nose for the ball.

I watched Trey very closely yesterday as I was there when the doors open an hour before the game started. He was moving around at 100% as he was s screwing around prior to the game throwing the ball off the backboard and dunking. He was also doing all the slide defensive drills with no issues. None. Kid, love your positivity but Trey is not a good player when the game gets physical. He just is not. He really is a 3 mentally but can’t shoot the ball. He was taking 3 point shots prior to official warm ups if that tells you where his mind set is. In fact, he was the last guy off the floor as he did not go into the locker room until he made a 3. We have to find someone, anyone who has some physicality to them or we will continue to come up short against the better programs when it really matters. We get pushed around so easy. Trey missed a wide open lay up (air balled it)because he saw the pressure coming and you could see him flinching when a body came at him as the play happened right in front of me. In fact, my 16 year old looked at me and said “DAD” oh my gosh that was a pussy play. He was absolutely correct and there were two occasions when a Teague and Moses hit the side of the backboard on offensive rebounds as they were bodied under the basket. Not trying to kill the kid but we have some guys that are plain soft and it reers it’s ugly head against stronger opponents.

I do not expect him to really do anything. Also he has been practicing for a year its not like he just arrived on campus. The whole problem is that he would be useful in that situation much later in the year. NOT in the second game where neither he or the team is ready to switch gears on offense.
Suppose for sake of argument he helps us in that situation today on defense. Not a sure thing, but assume it. what would be the result on the other end? Staff made the bet that net we were better off having better chance to score and stay in the game that way. It did not work all that well in hindsight, but it was probably the right call.
Practicing for a year is not the point. Did he play a lot of minutes with the first team offense? How good was he in that role? We don't know one way or the other so it's easy for us to assume something. The staff knows a lot better what to expect.
Give him some normal game experience (and don't throw him in and experiment in the the crucible of Mackey Arena) before you make the other gamble the other way.
Bottom line is we don't need more minutes from Huggins now, we need more minutes from Trey.

Trey played 23 minutes and had 2 rebounds. 2. That is awful for a guy who sure was moving pretty dog gone well. He absolutely hates contact and it is pretty obvious when you watch it live.

The coaches aren't idiots. I am also not mind reading quite as much on the pregame routine.
He was on a limited play count. He certainly is not playing at game speed. That much at least we agree.
AND I do agree that we have seen that getting Trey to play with real aggression and high energy is not easy at the best. He does better when he is feeling 100%. He did it for a stretch last year. We will have to have that to beat really good teams. But probably not most in the MAC.
