Excellent interview. It seems he has the ability to be a very good coach. He does need to watch his mouth on the court! Hunsaker at a Men’s Gym timeout……due to team success and full houses, those conversations went unheard by the majority of the crowd.

I like that he said he came here to win and be close to home!

Hearing him say Pass the fucking Ball and later watching him attack a table was one of the best moments I’ve seen at Worthen in years. For so long I watched whit squated at the end of bench watching a program crumble around him.

Overall I thought Whitford was a good hire at the time, however, the results were underwhelming; I've often wondered if he (Whitford) may have been deeply affected by the Zach Hollywood 'situation'. Being far removed (geographically, etc.) from the inner-workings of the University community as I am and thus not privy to inside information , perhaps Whitford felt a deep seated sense of responsibility, which altered his approach to "pushing" players to a higher level. Just musing late at night.

Just musing late at night. I agree partly. I think the part about him being affected by the Hollywood situation is untrue, mostly because his teams got better after the incident. I also know Whit, and while he was affected by it, it didn't change anything drastically in his life. Hollywood hadn't been around for a long time, and social media was what got to him. A big part of Whit's tenure at BSU was a string of bad luck. I know a lot of people on this thread will hate that, but it's true, like it or not. When he had his best team, the tournament was canceled due to Covid. He inherited a terrible, awful team, and turned it around in one of the biggest turnarounds ever in college basketball history, into the MAC semifinal vs Akron in 2016, when he was missing a healthy Persons and healthy Moses... and still only lost by 4. A couple of middling years with internal issues between him and the administration, some late recruits backing out, the transfer portal, and injuries led to a couple 18-19-20 win seasons with 1st or 2nd round appearances. And now, two years ago, we lose to #1 Toledo in overtime in the tournament, and we begin to call for his firing? After last year, in which we had a season in which we lost by ten to Ohio in the MAC tournament, who had Ben Vander Plas( who now plays for Virginia), and Mark Sears, who plays for #20 alabama, we want him out immediately? This team had a lot of potential and instead of letting the coach who brought every single one of those players in find out what he could do with a more mature team, we fire him with a year left on his contract and hire the big name coach. This just doesn't sit right with me. I know y'all will hate this, but this is what I believe.

My memory of the specifics has faded but I remember in his second year feeling stunned by the amount of bad luck we suffered. The problem is at some point you have to take total ownership. I liked Lewis’ use of the quote that winners know why they win and losers dont know why they lose.

He flat out failed. No other way to look at it. He finished with a record of 131-148. It’s often said teams will reflect their coach’s personality. Whitford’ s teams played with little or no emotion and very little discipline. Close games were often given away with poor shot selection & turnovers down the stretch. Beth Goetz was right to make a change! It was time!!! Looking forward to the Lewis era!!!

Yeah, I guess when you think about it, we have really failed to appreciate those golden moments like losing to Akron by only 4, losing to Toledo in overtime, losing by ten to a team with a player who is now at Alabama, and of course having a three seed in a tourney that was cancelled. We have been spoiled and may not see as good losses for a long time to come. Maybe someone should create a highlight video "Whitford's greatest losses" with appropriately dramatic music to remind us of what we are now missing.

BUT bottom line, the first two years were brutal. His best years were at best close but no cigar. And longer term, he had real failings in term of relationship with the public. What he was trying to do was not the kind of black and blue BSU basketball we had enjoyed in the past. He never really sold that, or had the results to do so...
Had he pulled a rabbit out of the hat the last year, many would still have wanted a change. The administration found the money and it was a good time for a change. Mike Lewis looks like he can avoid a terrible start, and his personality, and high energy emotional intensity is going to be appreciated in contrast to Whit's serious but low key approach.
I agree Whit handled some adversity well. But. He was not for whatever reason ready to step into this job originally, and was not blessed with a good group for him to work with. He deserved more credit than he got for recruiting and whatever he did the last few years left the program with some talent that Lewis has a chance to make a good start. Whitford "just missed" too often on recruits he needed to make it all work.
As losses mounted, many had here had unfounded theories of his failings. Fans with high expectations being quite understandably dissatisfied with results morphed unfairly into charges that often amounted more to character attacks than really fair criticism. I regret seeing that.
