Obviously, you are a Whitford buddy & fan. He had 9 years to build a successful program. He flat out failed. No other way to look at it. He finished with a record of 131-148. It’s often said teams will reflect their coach’s personality. Whitford’ s teams played with little or no emotion and very little discipline. Close games were often given away with poor shot selection & turnovers down the stretch. Beth Goetz was right to make a change! It was time!!! Looking forward to the Lewis era!!! Exactly. The excuses needed to end and Beth finally did it. I have never thought the administration were buying into excuses as much as it was about real lack of commitment to athletics. There were reasons not excuses each year to kick the can down the road in a lot of years where there was great budget uncertainty and where there was no real priority to winning basketball in light of other priorities.
Beth didn't suddenly realize anything, but instead bided time and looked for a way and had finally found the money for a buyout.(1 year anyway)
Lewis has a chance to get off to a decent start, and with good luck instead of bad, he can be successful. If that happens as we all hope, we'll find out whether we have found a real commitment to winning and can find the resources to continue that after a successful coach moves on.
That would be a great contrast to how we last handled success.

Whit was a mediocre coach. We could have kept him forever because nobody was ever going to hire him away from us. That should tell you something.
If we had kept him he would have continued to produce teams that would finish somewhere between 4th and 8th in the MAC and never be quite good enough to beat the league's best teams.
Probably a decent enough guy. His actions with regard to Moses and Hollywood seemed laudable.
And he deserves credit for putting a lot of the current team in place, although I feel pretty confident that those players wouldn't have improved much under Whit during their time as BSU.
I laugh a little at the idea that we fired him to hire a "big name coach." Sure, Lewis has name recognition in Indiana, but the two coaches' positions before coming to BSU would probably give Whit a higher profile.
All that being said, at least Whit has proven himself to be mediocre. Lewis has talked a good game and I have high hopes but he hasn't proven diddly.

Yeah, that poor Jim Whitford had so much gosh darned bad luck that he was only able to win two MAC tourney games in eight tries over 9 seasons.

Although it seriously overheated my Cray CX1000, I was able to count the number of excuses made in this forum for Whitford over 9 years.....269 trillion. Of course the board members who did this are so embarrassed for being so wrong for so long, that they barely post here anymore.

It's funny that a lengthy thread about our new coach has turned into yet another breakdown of the last coach on the eve of the first game (and reading it in the aftermath of a historic beatdown makes it slightly more comical), but here we are.
I've said many times to many people that I thought Whitford was a nice guy, but also your generic assistant coach. Some people are just better as assistants.. that's not a fault, just reality. I think he mentored (some) players well, was probably a positive influence they didn't have in their lives, and counseled well to their emotional needs. Again, qualities of a good assistant. I obviously have no idea how he behaved in the locker room or practices, but what I saw in games was almost no accountability for poor shot selection or mental mistakes, and only occasional coaching-up. He did little to no working of officials who constantly jobbed us and he largely failed to connect with the community at large and supporters of the program beyond his first couple of seasons. Yes, he had some successes, but also a lot of coming up short when the potential for more was there. The Buckley-Thompson-Taylor-Whitford era had birthed a generation of apathy that Whitford would have sustained even if he began to produce consistent winners, so it became vital to move on from his lifetime contract when we did. The END, please?

I recall the last time a coach really got engaged with the students was Majarus back in...hmmm....1988? Was that the year of the Purdue game at Irving Gym where students camped outside all night, and Rick delivered doughnuts to the students (or at least the ones he didn't eat for himself)?
Full disclosure, I am long time BSU fan just haven't been too excited the last 20 years.
I am now.
