I just watched the game and wish I had not. Wow. Bad choice.

Looked like an NAIA team! The second half was about as a bad a Ball State game that I have have ever watched! Destroyed my desire to drive two hours to Muncie to watch them play.

A second tier instate foe and we lose by 24?? Unacceptable.
The 10 game finish of last season plus the exodus of several players has me really concerned about Lewis being the answer. Good coaching finishes a season with improvement and retains players.

Coach Lewis has said we’ve had two consecutive games of “ridiculously bad” basketball. Definitely agree with that so now how can we make adjustments? Identification of struggles is nice and all, but hopefully we can see some positive changes. Just being stronger with the ball will change this drastically for us!

Good coaching finishes a season with improvement and retains players. We are as second tier as Evansville. Last year’s finish was the result of no bench and we had to grind our starters into the ground which resulted in injuries and nothing left in the tank. The departure of players is the new reality of college basketball. Sparks, Sellers and Coleman all moved up to P5 programs for six figure deals and the allure of competing in high major programs. Every team in America is dealing with it. Lewis is a helluva bench coach, IMO. Whether he can recruit the talent to win a title is still up for debate but he’s just starting year two so maybe we shouldn’t vomit a bunch over it yet. We got our ass handed to us in our first road game against a comparable team in the second half. It sucks but in truth I just don’t think we have any true Alpha players and our holdovers aren’t great. Pearson and Jihad are role players. Anderson is probably our best player and after that it’s a who knows roster. Jones, Brown and Doughty are good freshman but it’s gonna take time. If you want to level set your expectations for this year my prediction is a floor of 10 and a ceiling of 17 but I’d bet closer to the floor. We have too many new faces and not enough difference makers.

Good coaching finishes a season with improvement and retains players. With NIL that old rule of thumb about keeping players is unreliable. How exactly was he supposed to retain them? Improvement over a season is what we look for this year. We knew coming in this year would be ugly at times. The talent we have is young, and freshmen even with talent are not always coachable... Mix that with the number of new faces it's going to mean ups and downs.

We have some athletes, but athletic players needing physical development not just experience and coaching. Jones and Doughty are strong for freshmen, but each can add muscle. Jihad is still young, not grown into what he can be. Add 15+ pounds and learning to use it, he can be a lot different player.

How anyone could not expect games like this season doesnt make sense. We all saw what we lost and who we signed. It never was and will not be close to an even. We just dont have the guys no matter how much you coach them up. Its on Lewis to find the guys and if we are still are looking talking like this in year 4 dont extend try again.

It's not just getting but keeping. And somehow not getting too much maybe. Without NIL and portal we'd have had very good team this year. Most of us wanted a big transfer, got as a trade off Doughty who we might want NOT to be too good, so we keep him. Very strange new era. The art seems to be to both not lose so many but spread out losses evenly, somehow keeping a good returning core. We don't have that. We probably have a core in development, need to snag transfers to strengthen it, but it's just not the old pattern of finding and developing players. You can't keep the best.

How this new recruiting goes is hard to predict, and very hard to tell if a new coach is going to be better or worse in evaluating a change. We'll be lucky to have a better idea about that when we make next hire.
Tarkanian at UNLV thrived on turnover, was long term, I wonder if we'll see a mid major version of that success at a school like BSU.
Somebody who thrives on JUCOs, leftovers and transfers from big schools. Won't be a formula for big schools, could be at mid majors.

Let’s be realistic for a 1990 moment. If Lewis isn’t the answer, then we have no answer.

WE were only down 3 at the half and played hard the first half but the length and intensity of EV took us out. I think playing Anderson University would be a real close challenging game for us. Hell some of the players that I was associated with in Jr. High such as Ray Tolbert, Bobby Wilkerson, Winston Morgan, and Stew Robinson would be a challenge for us at age 14 and 15. Oh I forgot Troy Lewis.

My concern with Lewis is that in this age of free agency and the portal his style of coaching will push players away and cause them to tune him out. I think he’s a good X’s and O’s coach. I love his brutal honesty and enthusiasm for Ball State but just not sure his hard-nosed style suits todays player. I don’t think we need to wait 4 years to evaluate whether he’s truly a good coach. We should know more at the end of this season based on how the players develop and how they respond to his coaching regardless of the win-loss record

Calhoun's time frame for decisions on a 5 year contract time line are pretty conventional wisdom.
