Some of you guys are missing the masterly way in which Lewis is building the roster. Last year, even though he inherited 3 all-mac level starters and another on the all-defensive team, he could not have been expected to contend because of the poor depth. As you know, all MAC teams always have at least two good players to cover each of the five positions. I can't think of the last time a MAC team didn't. That's just what a standard MAC roster always has. Except for the team Lewis inherited. So, that's an ironclad excuse right there.
And this season, you are seeing how a master roster builder addresses that problem. You know that Jihad was one of those substandard bench players last year. Perhaps you have noticed that he is no longer a substandard bench player dragging down the quality of our bench! Genius! Now we have a bench that is looking it might collectively average AT LEAST 2.5 total points a game...if not maybe 3.0.
THAT, my friends, is how you build a deep championship roster.

Calhoun's time frame for decisions on a 5 year contract time line are pretty conventional wisdom. And we CANNOT deviate from the conventional wisdom. EVERThat and cost of multiple year buyout do have practical consequences.

And we always have to include that buyout clause in the contracts to our selected coaches because they will not be interested in the job unless insured heavily against their own failure. That would seem to suggest something to me, but....whatever.

You suggest we enter the competitive market for a coach not paying all that well AND as the only school in D1 not offering guaranteed money? With the additional downside of the coach leaving at will without getting his new school buy out the BSU contract if we did by a miracle hire a success.

I'm not sure what to expect out of the rest of this season. The loss at Evansville wasn't as surprising as the apparent way we lost.
I think it's fair to criticize Lewis for the roster he's put together. It will be quite a test of his coaching to see what he can do with this team from this point.
We've got 8 games before MAC play, and I expect maybe a 3-5 record in those games. If we develop a little maybe we turn that to 5-3.
I've been critical in the past of folks calling our teams young when they actually weren't. While the core of our starting line-up has plenty of college experience, you can't deny 6 of our top 10 players (in minutes played) are in their first year of college ball. That's typically not a recipe for early success.
If we are somehow competitive in the MAC (top 4 regular season) by the end of the year, that'll be a credit to Lewis.
If we are not, he'll certain take a significant amount of criticism, and it will be on him to prove in Year 3 that he is capable of negotiating the waters of Div I head coaching in the current environment.

He doesn't have to prove jack squat in year 3. BSU does not require that. BSU's focus is to protect coaches against the possibility of their own failure, and contracts are written with job security in the event of failure being the foremost priority.

Mills and RMC are right.
Lewis can't be judged by this game, in a rebuilding year. Disappointing, but given the NIL nturnover and youth not exactly a huge surprise that we will lay an egg.
He'll be a success this year if the team comes together at the season end. How he prepares for year 3 a lot better information than this year.
We can also judge the recruiting and roster makeup a lot better in year 3 and by then understand portal turnover better in general.

General, how is the BSU contract different from other D1 schools?
Other mid majors?

General, how is the BSU contract different from other D1 schools? Other mid majors? Oh my Goodness! Did you think I was advocating doing something DIFFERENT!? Departing from the conventional wisdom? Heavens no! Do you think I'm nuts? Instead we should continue to do exactly what has bitten us in the ass the last four coaches in a row and caused us to endure multiple additional seasons of failure and mediocrity by tying our hands financially and protecting a coach against the consequences of his own failure. Doing anything else is crazy talk.

There are young hungry coaches who would come here without the benefit of a safety net contract. If they do good they would move on anyway. If not then they also would be gone without having to pay a buyout. Agree with the General.

We can also judge the recruiting and roster makeup a lot better in year 3 and by then understand portal turnover better in general. It's totally unfair to compare Lewis's efforts to those of teams like Evansville, Kent, Akron and OU and programs like that who can recruit and keep good players because they are protected from the transfer portal by a magic force field, and who have access to unlimited millions of dollars of NIL money. When you look at the KenPom rankings, you see that the programs ahead of BSU are bluebloods who don't have to deal with the disadvantages BSU does. Northern Colorado, SIU Edwardsville, Utah Tech, Troy, Bellarmine, Purdue FtWayne, Cal Baptist. You know...the power programs. Programs rolling in money. When you look at the ten players getting pre-season all-MAC mention, you see right away that these are players that no MAC school could hope to have on the roster due to the transfer portal and NIL. It's totally unrealistic to expect any MAC coach to have all-MAC players on their roster. Nor can we expect there NOT to be a recruiting and talent fall off compared to the days of Jim Whitford. That guy was a force of nature with a gigantic personality that lit up any room. Recruits could not resist his charm and slick, winning ways!

The additional question will be HOW to compare. Comparing ANY school losing 4 or 5 transfer players to schools losing fewer players in ANY year seems to ignore a relevant factor.
Nobody is saying we should not compare to the MAC or other similar schools over time. Of course given the MAC has more than its share of bottom feeders this year probably means we should consider doing so over time and comparing to all MAC schools who are similar.
I see no successful MAC school, mid major, or D! school, adopting your theory that guaranteed contracts can be avoided.

No successful school follows your model. Your idea that doing something else would be better, doesn't have much evidence.
The guaranteed contract is surely a benefit to coaches, one they can get at any school, and one the market seems to indicate it is a necessary one. It does also have some benefits to the school.

On what do you base the opinion that there are winning D1 calibre coaching candidates who would come forward without guarantee?
If there are such candidates who are likely winners and who we could spot and would want, isn't it fairly likely other schools would spot them and make competing offers, including a guarantee?
if you are buying the General's policy that we can pick winners from under the radar candidates whose main plus is they will work cheap and without a net creates the problem of how exactly we conduct a search.
Why would we expect to have greater insight in an unconventional search in evaluating coaching credentials?
How exactly do we beat the market on this? I really don't think the General thinks our AD is smarter than all the rest, or better at judging coaching talent.
Current methods rely on consulting well respected coaches, ADs, and other experts. Very conventional...for a good reason.
