All I see is 2008 BSU football. Incredible season ending with losing the most important games and losing the coach. If they replace Schertz with a guy who has an overwhelmingly losing record as a head coach they’ll complete the car exploding as it lands in the ravine. I suspect Graves (that coach with a losing record) will be their coach next year. They've already named him interim and with an interim AD and an outgoing president who won't be gone yet for a couple more months ... Hard to see them sticking the next people in their positions with a coach under a long-term contract ... And hard to see them waiting until July or later to make a hire ... They'll probably stick Graves with the interim tag for a year to win or lose the job or give him a very short-term deal that the next president and AD can easily get out of if warranted.

If he's really connected to the players and can keep 2 or 3, that might be a Ray McCallum like play. Don't think he is a Hunsaker, coach in waiting guy.
It will be days only to see what players want to follow to StL, or ship out elsewhere.
They don't have much time in the portal window to wait on a national search.
Call me skeptical that they can sell ISU and get a lot better in a national search without keeping players. AD had to know this was coming and started looking earlier, so maybe they have some interest.

And yep, the gutting of Indiana State has begun. 3 starters in the portal so far.

The job isn't high paying. Now a very hard rebuild. Decent NIL. A good mid major job. Success as a mid major doesn't have the longer term positive impact it had in the past.

Cliff notes? Not a subscriber. 00 seems to subscribe to everything. Must have deep pockets when it comes to paywalls. Fortunately I seldom read the Indy Star so I hadn't burned-up the 3 or 4 articles you are allowed before having to pay. Basically the writer of the article (Gregg Doyel) blames the current state of athletics at Indiana State on the Board of Trustees and their recent hires of Athletic Director Sherard Clinkscales and President Deborah Curtis (think Gora at BSU). Clinkscales announced a mutually agreed separation from ISU on December 31, 2023 and Curtis' last year at ISU was the 2023-24 school year. Doyel claims the baseball coach left in part because ISU failed to host the Super Regional baseball game against TCU (I'm guessing they lost) because the Special Olympics were in town at the same time and most of the hotel rooms were already booked. Claims the athletic dept should have worked to find hotel rooms in neighboring towns and still hosted the game like U. of Kentucky did in a similar circumstance. Basically the athletic department was lazy. Per the article, "The Super Regional fiasco of 2023 hurt him, and people close to Hannahs will tell you the school’s failure to replace Clinkscales with longtime assistant AD Angie Lansing was the final straw." As for the men's basketball coach; "the departure of men's basketball coach Josh Schertz was different. He was wildly successful — kudos to Clinkscales for hiring him — but unpopular within the athletic department, a self-serving climber routinely allowed by Clinkscales to play by different rules from the rest of the department."

It wasn't just the AD. I believe there was long standing conflict (not just about athletics) over the BOT selecting the President who hired the AD and supported their decisions, or were part of them. Not hard for us at BSU to believe a President would make fateful decisions about athletics...
Doyel also alludes to the funding issues with athletics generally, but that also is institution wide. There are few areas at ISU which don't have that issue.

Let's find out whatever different rules Schertz was allowed to play by and let Lewis play by those rules
