It’s been heard that we shouldn’t be surprised by up to $700K for the new HC - plus another chunk for coordinators. What does that “buy” these days? Maybe a little hope… In a word, relevance.

A little sunshine. Something to make feel like BSU football can be good again. My wife and I have already decided that we would renew our season tickets and support CVC, and showing support the new coach, as long as it is not a Lynch. All I ask is that compete for MAC Championships.

It's funny how in these discussions everyone ignores the one superpower that has kept MAC football afloat for years - the ability to reach into the students' pockets and take out $10 million+ dollars per year to cover the losses. (By the way - what ever money some sugar daddy might come forward with will never be near enough to cover all the programs losses and will be dwarfed by what the students have to pay) People make statements like "MAC football is not viable at the FBS level" or "MAC football will no longer be viable if such and such happens". Well, I'll tell you what - when you can lose more than $10 million a year and have it covered by someone else YOU WILL ALWAYS BE VIABLE. It does seem like the power schools are headed down a path where the MAC won't be welcome. The power schools may formally separate themselves into a higher classification. They may kick the MAC out of the playoff system entirely (which may have symbolic meaning but makes no practical difference). They may establish some sort of system to pay players that puts the MAC even further behind competitively. I have heard they may begin to play games only among themselves. I can't see this happening as they seem to find value in what amounts to home exhibition games against lesser programs. But whether all or none of this happens, I think MAC football will end up looking more or less like it currently does and will keep spending and losing pretty much the same level of money each year. Why? Because people who have the ability to take $10 million+ of other people's money NEVER fail to take advantage of that ability. EVER. It's just not in human nature. So as you all make predictions, be sure you account for the 8-figure sum that students have to pay for football, and don't tell us it's going to disappear, rather tell us how BSU football will spend it in the future. I have advocated for years that we should drop to the FCS and adopt the Ivy league model of NO scholarships. Play IN State, IL State, YSU, Dayton, Butler, Eastern Kentucky, etc. However, if you decide to remain in the MAC - be competitive for conference titles! Yes, it means leaning heavily on student fees like most Group of 5 schools, while I’m not a Democrat, that means someone else pays the bill. STOP BEING A LOSER! I don’t care what level you play at or who you play - win more than you lose!

Inflation of costs is outstripping the increases in fees and has been for some time. The new era of NIL and revenue sharing guarantee that.
That 10 mil, even with some years of million dollar giving by a donor, will not be enough longer term. It will delay. Fans can enjoy it short term, the issue is how short is short term.
Remember the majority of students are going into debt using govt subsidized loans to pay for the football deficit and other increasing college costs. The amount that can be squeezed out of them is practically unlimited.

Sherm we have all acknowledged student fees every year for the last 15 years.. There is no need to even bring it up everyone knows it.. We all also know we lose money every year... We all also know its never going to change and at some point some year its going to end.... What you guys cant grasp is we are not going anywhere till the MAC folds.. So to sum it all up
We Will continue to spend/waste/whatever money that is made up of mostly student fees until the MAC folds.. Nothing will change that especially a circle conversation that has been going on for 15 years

Nothing will change that especially a circle conversation that has been going on for 15 years I believe saying we lose money on athletics is not accurate. We spend money on a program the university feels is worthwhile. I spend a bunch of money on cars and other things that don't pay for themselves and for which there will never be a return on investment. Am I losing money on these items? No. I'm spending money on something I can afford and feel is worthwhile. The university is not losing money funding football. The university is not spending money it can not afford to spend. Wasting? In some people's opinions sure. And hell yes student fees should pay for it. Athletics is a part of what Ball State offers for the money the students pay, right along with classes, buildings, flowers, trees, statues, professors, Geoffrey Mearns, Charlie Cardinal, and everything else. If the students don't like the price, or don't like Ball State, go elsewhere. There is not a shortage of college choice in this country. It's their own damn fault if students don't take advantage of what Ball State offers. This is coming from an alumnus and parent who has paid for six Ball State degrees and doesn't feel he got robbed by doing his part to pay for Ball State's athletics programs. Happy Thanksgiving Oh, and I don't think the MAC or MAC football is going anywhere even if the Big Ten and SEC break away and form something college athletics was never intended to be.

I, on the other hand, tend to think that the value BSU students place on football is accurately reflected by student attendance at games. But if you want to assert it brings them high value based on special knowledge you have…go right ahead

I get that Jim.
You're willing to pay present fees, maybe higher fees. Not all can see the expense so easy to meet
And, the University. budget is tight. Present fees not enough. We can't ignore that long.

Every last one one of us regular posters that have in that conversation or the same one thats been happening since clinton knows about student fees. There is no new blood on this all the jedis have been trained and chosen a path It's true that everyone on this message board, all 100 of us, have heard this over and again. And it's wonderful that Jim proudly paid those fees so his kids could have that well-rounded college experience. Hell, when I went to school, I didn't bitch about it either. Then again, I was able to pay for college as I went and didn't have $50,000-100,000 of debt when I left school. So while WE are all in the know, I would venture to say that if there was a check-off box on their bill asking if students/parents wanted to contribute to the $10 million annual deficit of the Ball State football program, the vast majority would say no. I would guess more would vote to voluntarily fund those flowers, trees, statues and even Geoffrey Mearns than they would the football program. Then again, I've seen more students sitting under trees on campus than I have in the stands at the football stadium.

Happy Thanksgiving, fans and curmudgeons …
20,000 - Students $35,000 - Cost Per Student Per Year $700,000,000 - BSU Revenue Per Year from all students $10,000,000 - Football Deficit $500 - Cost per Student Per Year $83 - Deficit Cost Per Game Per Student $15 - Actual per Game (students present ID to get into events, as I understand it) $68 - Actual Per Student Per Game $410 - Actual Student Cost for the Football Deficit per Year Assuming the above, yes, BSU students, who endure an approximate $35K/Year education, have to pay $400 of that to the football program.
