Are those football accurate only numbers... Those student fees are also not just funding football they are funding all sports MAC schools make it difficult to know the exact amount of money lost on football for obvious reasons, but it does appear the football-only loss is well over $10 million per school per season now. Just looking at revenue versus the publicly admitted budget expenses it is about 10 mil.
Student fees do count on the revenue side.
Each school also assumes costs to having football that are not on the athletic department budget. So you could argue most actually lose more.
OTOH the scholarship expenses which are a large component are tricky to value. Most are out of state, so the actual expense of having another "football" student is not really quite that much to the university.
And, as many argue, there are benefits in "good will" or advertising which don't show up in an income statement.
These two factors are not clear, but we used to have fewer out of state scholarships and the advertising was worth a bit more as the MAC was a more valuable brand.
As for traceable cash payments, students do pay that activity fee, and about 10 mil is transferred to the "income" side of the athletic budget, for what that is worth, not spent elsewhere. Without FSB FB those fees MIGHT be spent on other student benefits, or more in state scholarships for lower level FB where Indiana athletes would be competitive? Or for other sports programs?
Whatever the accounting statements say, we know expenses are greater every year. Coaching salaries and many other expenses are growing. And whatever the scholarship accounting is it is more expensive to educate a student every year.

WiiliamTSherman and 00hmh, are the finances for football coming directly out of your pocket? No? Then for the love of dreamers everywhere and the achievements they have created… On this subject… STFU!

If anyone needs me, I'll be in a cave up in the Himalayas for the next 5 years, reevaluating my life.

Some more math to put perspective on how ridiculous MAC football finances Are those football accurate only numbers... Those student fees are also not just funding football they are funding all sports Sure not all student fees go to FB. Or, to athletics. An athletic program using student fees to finance an overall deficit is no scandal. Sherm puts almost zero value on any athletic expenditures, so he differs on that. The size of the FB deficit in the MAC, he's pretty close on that.

Are you sure spending the money on something else wouldn't produce achievement and fulfill dreams?
Lots of dreams for FB lovers and players would be there with lower division FB.
